The Shadow Elf Caste-system
The Shadow Elf Caste-system
The Forbidden City of the Shadow Elves has its own caste-system,
as does the Village.
At the top of the Elven caste-system are the High Lords.
- They are the true temporal rulers of Sybarus, being considered
demi-gods, and often serve as vessels for Gods seeking to
manifest themselves physically. The High Lord positions may
be filled by males or females. - The Hegemon of Sybarus has the highest ranking. Upon the death
of a Hegemon, votes are cast by the High Seat of each House
for one of the three High Lords to assume the position. The
Hegemon is the Leader of all military forces in Sybarus.
Traditionally, the Hegemon is also the Lord High Commissioner. - The Lord High Commissioner, usually also the Hegemon, outranks
the other two High Lords. The busiest of the three, his duties
involve acting as Plalgus' representative in matters of Justice,
as well as seeing that the City and its services run smoothly. - The Lord High Inquisitor is perhaps the most feared of all the
High Lords. He supervises the capture and questioning of those
who violate the laws of Sybarus. He and his Inquisitors are
permitted to use any means necessary, including torture, to
determine the truth as they see it (however relative). The
Inquisitor acts as the Hegemon's deputy in military issues,
particularly those involving maintaining the Peace and pursuing
criminals. - The High Lord Executioner plays a morbid but necessary role in
Sybarite society. It is his duty to see that criminals are
punished and the condemned die as befits their crimes.
Second in the social rankings are Shadow Elves.
- Shadow elves are the nobles of this Society. They are generally
very vain, both of their beauty and their intellect, though not
without reason. A proud people, they take their responsibilities
as caretakers of Sybarus very
seriously. The Shadow Elves are, with very few exceptions, always
affiliated/associated with Sybarite Houses. - Those Elves whose Houses are nearest to the Palaces of the High Lords
are those highest in favour and wealth. They are known as Noble/Great
Houses and are generally called by their Family names. - The second ring from the High Lord Palace contains the Major Houses.
These are generally the most ambitious and viscious elves, mainly
because they are either on their way up or down in the social scale,
and wish to improve their status at any cost. - Lastly, there is the third ring from the Palace, which is that of
the Minor/Lesser Houses. These elves are especially snobby and given
to ostentatious displays of wealth, mainly because they are newly
risen and wish to distinguish themselves from those who are without
rank.
Third in the elven caste-system are the Half-Elves.
- The overwhelming majority of half-elves are those offspring of
cross-species mating between humans and elves. They are raised
within a House until apprenticed at a young age. Though not Pure,
they are permitted most of the priviledges and responsibilities
of those who are.
