An Overview of Sybarus
Location
-
The City of the Shadow People, Sybarus lies on a cluster of rocky,
pillar-like islands in a subterranean sea. Everything that exists in the
Cavern of the Source is considered 'Sybarus', though each island also has
its own name. Sybarus also extends into the portions of the Utterdark
which are maintained by the Sybarites, though much of it is yet untamed.
Illumination
-
At the point where the islands lie the roof of the cavern is very high.
Running across the ceiling of this cavern is a vein of light-producing
mineral (which is considered a manifestation of the Spirit Being revered
by the Shadow Elves, and which the Seers seem to worship). It gives off a
scintillating light that grows and recedes in strength (bright to near
dark) in a seemingly random fashion.
Access
-
The only way to access the islands directly is by ferries from the shores
of the sea, near the Outpost Fortification. Ships that traffic with the
outside world land at a port at the normal ground-level; from there a winding
path must be followed down to the Outpost. Additionally, the Outpost is
reachable through the Underdark tunnels beginning in the mountains of Terel.
Layout
-
Two of the three major islands in the cluster mentioned above form a
city. The City proper is split into four parts: the Forbidden City, the
Bazaar, the Dungeons and the Village. The Bazaar, the Dungeons and the
Village occupy the second largest island while the Forbidden City alone
occupies the smallest. The third and largest island (The Holm of the
Icondite) has been turned into a park filled with enchanted beasts and
vegetation. It is where the Shadow elves pursue their Hunt.
Additional islands are the Isle of the Dead, the Isle of the Insane
Priests, and a several other, minor ones.
