The Utterdark
The Avenirian Utterdark is a continuation of Mecien's Underdark in Terel.
What Mecien originally intended to do with the Terellian Underdark is not
known for certain, but in Avenir it is wrapped up in the historical
theme of the Domain. At some point in geological history some
forces devestated the surface of Avenir/Genesis, driving people under
ground, into the Underdark.
The Avenirian Underdark consists of several levels located beneath and
connected to the ones in Terel. The first level is simply those rooms
connecting Avenir Underdark with Terel's. The second level is the most
innocuous of levels, containing goblin and troll workers who are charged
with keeping the tunnels clear of debris. The third level is more sinister,
filled with imps and gargoyles, and is the site of a quest. The fourth
level is occupied with anti-social ogres and rats, and is the site of
a quest or two. The fifth level is the lair of the Worm. There are
probably other levels, as yet undiscovered, filled with unimaginable
creatures.
The Underdark is meant to be confusing and dark, having rare and unexpected
treasure, and fairly empty, since nearly all who resided there formed a
Pact with the Spirit Beings of Avenir and moved into Sybarus.
The way into Sybarus from the Underdark is across a Chasm of awesome
proportions. Its depth has never been plumbed, and the cause of its
creation is shrouded in mystery and ancient magic. The bridge across the
Chasm is guarded by a fort/outpost. This fort was built by the Sybarites
to guard against the invasion of other creatures from the Underdark, as
well as prevent Outlanders who sail into the Rift from crossing into
Sybarus, if need be.
