Stats are among the most poorly documented aspect of Genesis. help experience gives the best information, and even that is limited.

Stats

The six stats are: strength, dexterity, constitution, intelligence, wisdom and discipline.

strength
This stat determines how much you can carry. It also increases the damage of some special attacks. Contrary to rumour and misinformation, strength does not have any effect on the damage one does in normal combat.
dexterity
This stat determines how coordinated you are, how well you use a weapon, and how hard it is to hit you in combat.
constitution
This stat determines your hit points, how resistant you are to fatigue, and how fast you recover hit points.
intelligence
This stat determines how much mana you have and effects how many people you can remember.
wisdom
This stat also has a bearing on how many people you can remember.
discipline
This stat determines whom you are brave enough to attack, whom you can lead and who can lead you.

Quest experience

Stats are increased by gaining experience. There are two types of experience. The first is quest experience. This is gained by solving quests. Quest experience, once gained, is never lost. It is a reservoir which is never depleted. No matter how much other experience you lose, you will always have at least the quest experience you have gained.

Combat experience

The other kind of experience is combat experience. It is gained by slaying things. It can be taken away. The most common way of losing combat experience is by dying. When one dies, a significant portion of his combat experience is removed, and he is then reincarnated. Not final, but certainly a setback. Guilds will also often take some combat experience when one leaves.

It is worth noting that the only ways of becoming more experienced are by questing and fighting. Those who seek to become thieves or spellcasters should note this well. Essentially, the only way a thief or a magic user can become more experienced (aside from questing, which is equally available to all) is by going out and cracking skulls. An insulting notion, especially since thieves and spellcasters are bound by the rules to be poor fighters, but it has been the status quo for years.

Brute level

The ratio of combat experience to quest experience determines one's brute level. The more brutal one is, the less experience one gains from slaying. This acts as a sort of halt on the amount of experience one may earn and as a way of encouraging questing.

Preferences

In certain adventurers guilds and other places around the world it is possible to meditate. This command allows you to examine and manipulate your stats. You can use the estimate command to see how close you are to the next stat level. You can also change your stat preferences. This lets you shift your experience gain, within limits, so that you can concentrate on developing the stats you want to increase. A proportionate amount of the experience you gain will be channeled into that stat.

Taxes

When you join guilds, they will impose certain taxes upon you. A tax will take a certain percentage of the experience you gain and allocate it away from your stats. This will be shown when you examine your preferences while meditating.
