Genesis, like any respectable game, is one of rules. Players are expected to be familiar with those rules and to play within them. Breaking the rules is unfair, it makes the game less enjoyable for mortals and wizards alike, and it can have the unpleasant consequence that your character is deleted.
Moreover, Genesis is a complex game, with many commands and a specific, unfriendly interface. Fortunately, help files are provided in abundance, and the information exists to help you. And, of course, I advise that you RTFM.

The help files are the best source of information for the player. They are extensive, but what else do you have to do while waiting for boats? They can be accessed by entering the command

Another source of interesting information about Genesis as a whole is "gameinfo." To access this, log on to Genesis as gameinfo. The information is somewhat outdated, but gives one a basic understanding of how Genesis is structured.
Near every racial starting location is a book attached to a chain. This is a welcome from Styles, who is the Lord of Liwitch. There is a grim prophecy concerning Liwitch: "When Liwitch opens, Genesis shall die." And beware! dogs have been seen flying east, and ducks have been barking in the streets! It is an ominous time...
However, that's all beside my point. Open the book and read it. It's dated, too, yet it still contains valuable information.
When in doubt, ask your fellow mortals. They're a pretty canny lot (with a few exceptions here and there), and they should be able to give you some help.
