In terms of the crystal torque, there is definitely full instructions on the use and purpose of the torque as part of what you can find doing the quest. Of course, many people choose to simply get the walkthrough and not peek around and explore things along the way. They, naturally, will miss thing...

triggers can be super easy and helpful once you get the hang of them. if you want to chat privately i can try and set you on the right path!
