What determines whether or not you can quaff a particular potion?

I know a way to get obliviated really fast!
Step 1: Have a fragile stomach
Step 2: get that potion for resisting poison
Step 3: Drink it
Step 4: Let the drink do it's thing, if you didn't follow step one, great! You are now resistant to poison.
