GWT probably.
Packing up before he died, not quite sure, perhaps just a common courtesy.

Doesn't lower encumbrance increase your hit and evade chances?
Could have been a last ditch effort..

There used to be a bug when you quit with your backpack filled, the items would vanish. I think Dramli was hoping that his eq wouldn't fall into enemies' hands.

Alot of people have that incase they are with teammates so they can just "Get pack from corpse" and run off so they reduce the chance of loosing it

Could literally just get items from corpse though and run off. Whenever I die, I do that.

I once died (accidentally) while fighting a number of things.
As I killed one fiend, another monster gutted me.
Thing is, I died just at the moment my loot trigger fired.
So, I ended up visiting Death holding a shiny new mace. (Or war-hammer.. I can't recall..)
So it's like, "Hey, Death! What's up? Check out this hammer here.. You know, they say you can't take it with you," *twirls hammer* "But what do they know? Here, keep this as a memento of how cool I am."
Of course, I lost it upon returning to the mortal realm, but I had it when I was talking to Death and I thought that was hilarious.

Come to think of it, I probably should have submitted a bug report.. *shrug*

"Give hammer to death", would also have been intresting.
But somehow I have a feeling you, at that point, was not up to such fast thinking and typing.
