Gem/Torque Seemingly Unlisted Info

So... I learned about the purpose and use of these things outside of the narrative, and I haven't seen anything inside the narrative that leads to the information.

Am I just missing something huge here, or are people expected to get these things after long epic quests and then just randomly guess at how to activate them?

In terms of the crystal torque, there is definitely full instructions on the use and purpose of the torque as part of what you can find doing the quest. Of course, many people choose to simply get the walkthrough and not peek around and explore things along the way. They, naturally, will miss things like this as it is not part of a walkthrough since it isn't necessary to complete the quest. Go explore the area of the torque quest, and you might be able to find what you are looking for.

As for the Zodiac Gem, that one probably comes down to community knowledge, and ancient use of "magic reveal" spells from various caster guilds. If you are in a caster guild with spells that can give you information about the magical properties of various items, try casting it on your zodiac gem (and many other things!) :-)

For the crystal torque, maybe i just missed the full instructions - but i didn't have a walkthrough when I did it so maybe its not as obvious as yall think.. I just asked older players what the torque did.

Egwene: Oh we don't think it's obvious. As you know there is no such thing as something being "obvious" in Genesis. It's usually more in the style of:

Code: Select all

dig hole with bucket, fill hole with water from hose, swim water, search here 5 times, dig mud with hands, get gem, throw gem east, e, catch lizard with net, smash gem with lizard, collect shards, eat shards, get XP.
It's part of the charm!

Although to be fair Gorboth's quests usually have good logic so I bet there are instructions for the torque somewhere. I never found them either though, and didn't really look since it's easier to just ask someone. (Yes I am lazy).

The Zodiac gem is a very old quest though, from the days when Genesis was far less user friendly than it is today (yes FAR less). I have no idea if there is some type of hint on how to use it somewhere, except using abilities that can detect magical properties.

There isn't that I was able to find.

Everything in my areas can usually be discovered with one bit of syntax.

<exa ...>

My favorite command. Use it, and you can find almost anything I've ever created. Once in a while you might be prompted to try something else, of course, but <exa> will get you there. Once in a while I do require a <search> but mostly not.

The quest had a few narratives that talked about the torque being for fighting evil and protecting Telberin. Despite overflowing with red herrings, it never said anywhere that its only use was to scry other torque users, or what the syntax for doing so was. (I copied EVERYTHING into a text file and searched it afterward.) It also doesn't warn you that you won't be able to remove it once it's activated or tell you the incantation for banishing it. I had to learn all of that from elder players. (Except the getting stuck on my head part. I picked that up on my own.)

My "walkthrough" was quest orbs, which was pretty vague and frankly misleading in some ways.

It makes a bit more sense if there's spells that can reveal capabilities. In fact, I suppose that as an inventor I probably have one of them in 'analyze', but that destroys the object, so I'm not sure what kind of masochist would use it for things like zodiac or torque.

<exa> will get you there, if you care to return to the area and explore. All the things you learned from other players were originally learned by individual players who found the details you did not.

I must have missed something big then. There were three doors that I wasn't able to use, and the catapult and catapult ammo that I was never able to use. When the torque suddenly activated on me just from experimenting with the obvious things I was kind of shocked because it seemed like the quest was only half done.

So, after I saw this thread... I decided to go mess in the Torque area.

I have two questions:

a certain door behind vines... is possible to get past it?

and do the spells that are NOT the ones required to do the quest, work? or at least, some of them work?

EDIT: by the way, the instructions for the torque are rather easy to find :/ I now feel dumb for missing them the first time
