But in such events, people who can't dedicate one or two full weeks might still be able to have fun going nuts trying to win something that can be contained in a relatively brief timeframe.

How about something bi-weekly? Then it's reliable people are more likely to join something that they keep seeing over and over.. Just a thought.

Why not have an event that lasts one week, but you can only play for 12hrs or 24hrs over that week.

Walk to npc to start your event 'timer' and back to them to stop it. When the event timer is active you can see event items, when not, you cant. Once you reach 12hrs or 24 you are done.

This would give people a window to make plans within and the window would be far bigger than the actual challenge so many could participate equally.

That's an interesting idea!

Most events often means "the more you play the bigger the chance to win". Now, this means of course if you can't, or don't want, to play a lot during the event you probably won't finish in the top. Meaning a number of players are excluded from a shot at winning, unless they decide to play more than they usually do. Usually A LOT more. This is of course also how the rest of the game works, and how most games works. Play more to win. So in order to have en event where everyone has a shot at winning, and your strategy / skill / speed in the event is more important than how much you play, your suggestion is definitely interesting.

On the other hand, events are great at encouraging people to play more than they usually do, which causes a pretty nice player numbers spike. That type of design is usually how most games do it. Play more - win more. "Just one more turn" / "Just one more butterfly / turkey / item, etc". Classic addictive game-design.:) And as a game designer you of course WANT players to sacrifice everything else in their life because your game is so addictive they can't stop playing. Putting a limit on how much time you can put into an event, also puts a limit on the "addictiveness" of it all, and possibly the player number boost. So two sides to it.

But since most of our events are "play more to win" type of events, this could be a fun thing to try for sure. See how it goes. Of course, someone needs to code it and stuff... But in theory it's an interesting idea I think!

As I discussed the butterfly effect in the past, I didn´t enjoy it.

Don´t get me wrong. I love events, but I feel they need to be conscistent in some way to alignment.

As I was a necromancers at the time of the event, I found it silly seeing my guildmates running past me on open road with their nets held high over their heads.

Ok, necromancers are not purely evil, but then I once saw one of the Tower, one of His chozen ones chasing a butterfly with its net held high over his hed with an almost childish smile over his face.. that gave me more shivers throughout my body than them gazing majesticly over me. I dont think it couite fit in.

I thought the events should be more alignmentwide.

An example might be the fabric of the donut starting to crack and rifts opening up here and there, with minions starting to get through from another plane(maybe from the nether), and maybe minions or stronger ones in different sizes and strengths, sometimes easily killed, sometimes in need of teaming up.

It is just one suggestion, others might come up with much better ideas, and my idea is for sure open for much refinement.

The theme of most events go under the "fun" category, and technically they are all alignment-neutral I believe, I can't think of one that isn't at least. When it comes to RP it's no more "wrong" to see a necromancer than a knight run around chasing butterflies, so that really depends how strictly you RP your character/guild, not what alignment said guild has. I think in most cases it's definitely possible to find a a way to have your RP fit an event if you are creative, and if not, it's completely optional to participate. Most events we have have a pretty fun theme, that's how it is and not something that's likely to change quickly since it's taken some 15 years or so to build up the event database.:) Most events people have coded during the years are of the fun type.

When new events are created It's completely up to the AoE and the wizard(s) creating a new event which shape it will take though, if it's another fun type of event, or a more serious one like you described.

I understand, Im relatively new to the realms, so it was the first event I´ve seen and thought it was a relatively new thing.

Oh well, would love some event with a more dark history that mirrors the dark history of all of the realms. It doesn´t mean it wont be less fun :)
