Not really. If you are not in a guild, you can train and expect the skill to remain at the upper level trainable by AG.
For spell skills, I think, it was superior amateur, so that's the level they will remain as long as you have trained them.

Exactly. Whats the point then?

"No. It is red."

I'm thinking much the same. I've joined the Academy, and sunk a great deal of time and coin into a bunch of magic and spell skills, and have been taught all the spells the Academy accords, only for game messaging to tell me that I'm still not advanced enough in the proper skills to use anything in battle.

Volunteer community or no, someone wrote the Guide Page, and someone wrote the scrolls, and someone put together the handful of help sites, and people write these forum posts. I'm beginning to want a straight answer on EXACTLY how far I need to go in the EXACT skills to be able to so much as stick a schmuck orc with an icicle, and I've been trying hard not to go running to the ntell line every time a question comes up. Speaking from the perspective of having written more than one newbies' guide for more than one MMORPG, a couple pages on short- and long-term training paths and expectations is not a harrowing task to produce.

Actually, how about this for a direct question: is there any point to attempting to play a wizard at all? Shouldn't we newbies just be doing stickjocks?

I am not sure I follow? The game tells you that you're not advanced enough to use certain spells? Have you maxed your skills in the Academy? How long have you been a member? The Academy spells are all quite useful for newbies at low levels. I don't think they train their skills higher than superior journeyman or something? With skills at that level you should be able to kill things at your level. I am not sure how big you are, but your stats play a very big role in what you can kill, regardless if you are a magic user or melee fighter. What exactly are you trying to kill? Perhaps you are simply trying to kill stuff out of your league?

As for the game in general there's more melee than magic options, but there's definitely powerful magic users, and the most deadly guild in the game is probably the morgul mages. The Academy, just as the Cadets fighter guild is made to be good at newbie levels, not beyond. Like up to adventurer/adept-ish levels.

No, I haven't maxed every pertinent skill in the Academy. Is that what needs to happen before any of the spells work in combat at all? If so, then that goes back to my earlier speculation that it's just not worth someone's while to seek to be a wizard as a newbie, when one can pour all that training into using a sword instead.

As to trying to kill something above my level, the example I used in my post wasn't randomly chosen: we're talking schmuck orcs at the Orc Temple, ones I can handle perfectly readily with sword and fist. The precise messaging is "You do not have the required skills to cast this spell. You will need to receive more training in water spells and abjuration."

My skill in Abjuration is 'superior student,' in Water 'junior amateur,' and in Spellcraft 'expert amateur.' So ... before I send more good money after bad, how high do these levels need to be in order to cast successfully? What (if anything) does 'spellcraft' do for me?

Which spell are you trying to cast? If I was a guessing person, I reckon you'd need superior amateur in all three of those skills to cast the spell I am thinking you are trying to cast. And ideally have them as high as you can to get the maximum damage from those spells.

Spellcraft skill usually restricts how high you can train your other spell skills (or it used to).

As for whether it is worth your time training up magical skills? Most people would agree going the wizard path is the most skill expensive. Bang for buck for a newbie, the cadets are probably the better starting guild as you get a special attack that requires no skill training and good combat skills. But that points you down the melee path. If you are thinking of a career as a magic user, the academics are a good introduction.

Maybe the Magic schools could scribe some of the lesser spells spells, like light and things like that, and sell them. Perhaps even some potions as well?
You could expend the same mana and casting components to cast it on the paper, but you would only have to read the scroll to cast the spell, and perhaps the mana again?

My apologies; my usual expectation is that learning how games work is a good thing, and muddling around on my own asking as few questions as possible wasn't accomplishing much. Me not being the one starting this thread suggests that I'm not the first newbie to gnash my teeth over such issues.

It's also my experience that asking for information on viable training paths (or classes, or professions, system depending), especially with the statement "What I'm doing isn't working," isn't usually considered "whining." If newbies asking such questions here are tagged as "whiners," that's useful to know.

Anyway ...

Arman, I was trying to cast hydrokine, if that helps.
