Balance Roadmap

Post by Ckrik » 16 May 2022 19:22

Code: Select all

Greetings citizens of the Donut!

With Arman's long awaited fishing trip coming up Cherek
asked me to step into the Arch of Balance role among
the admins. Everyone please give Arman a big thank you
or a cold beer if you happen to bump into him fishing
somewhere this summer. He worked tirelessly to advance
the magic recode to the current state that it's in and
the AoB role in Genesis is a hot seat -- if you're
familiar with the history of magic in Genesis you'll
know that dealing with magic is not an easy task.

Arman is putting on his angler hat with the magic
system rebalance close to completion. We still have
tweaks to do and loose ends to tie up, but every guild
should be playable.

I will be looking at the following magic related items
in the near future to take us a couple more step closer
to the finish line -- the list is not exhaustive.

1. Some players feel that there isn't enough of a
gap in abilities between layman and occupational magic
guilds. My initial thinking via playing my old mortal
characters is that there may be something to this
sentiment among some players. However, it's hard to
tell without a proper investigation. Adjustments may
be made if the situation warrants it.

2. In our haste to get out as many spell power
enhancers into the game we decided their benefits
in an adhoc way so things seem a bit inconsistent and
incoherent. I (with Zizuph and Cherek's help) will
be codifying a set of rules governing the assignment
of power levels of the spell enhancers. We will be
adjusting existing items to comply with the still to
be created rules. This will also be an opporunity for
players to suggest items that should be made into
a spell power enhancer that hasn't already been
made into one.

3. Stun, blindness and disarm magical effects need
to be revisited and harmonized with the upcoming
Rangers modernization that Zizuph will be undertaking.

4. There are some specific spells that still need to
be tweaked. I will deal with them one-by-one.

In conclusion, while we still have some work to do,
magic using players should be already feel pretty
good about the state of things. If not, well you know
where my mailbox is.

For those of you who are observant, you may have
already noticed that Zizuph tranferred to the Gondor
domain. This is because Zizuph will be working with
Varian to modernize Rangers. Once Rangers are updated
all guilds in Genesis will be based on the game-wide
Genesis guild abilities library. This will be cause
for major celebrations since the guild modernization
project started over a decade ago. Rangers will be
the very last guild to complete modernization.

As a part of the Rangers recode we will be looking at
stealth and ways to make stealth more relevant in
modern Genesis. Hopefully I manage to avoid the curse
that has plagued Genesis AoBs over the past decade
and this revamp will not end up becoming a major
undertaking.

Arman took the approach of not letting perfection get
in the way of good enough so that timelines can be
accelerated. While we've seen small hiccups here and
there, it has proven to be quite successful given the
number of projects that we pulled off under his watch.
Though I think the pace of change will slow down a bit
to give players time to digest everything new, I
will be continuing Arman's approach so that the wizard
community can just as productive in bringing fun new
content under my watch as AoB.

Lastly, if you think creating content for the game
may be fun, send Cherek an application. We're always
looking for creative people willing to donate some of
their leisure time to the game that we all love.

Have fun Arman! Enjoy your vacation!
Hope to see you back! Thank you for all your work on the recode of the donut.

Congrats Ckirk!

Thank you for the road-map. Maybe Zizuph can do Tricksters next after the Rangers. ;)

Excited to see how stealth works and what plans are going for it. Stealth is pretty unique and is interesting. It is a bit clunky currently but hopefully it will be great!

Excited for the future.
