Results for the 2013 Thanksgiving Event!

Hello all!

Much belated, I have finally (with generous help from the Arch of Events,
Stern himself) gotten around to finalizing the rewards for the first and
only Necro-Thanksgiving Event from way back in 2013.

This event used the existing content of the realms as unfathomed material for
potential quest achievement. We wizards had no real idea how much could be
discovered or how quickly it would unfold. All races from all domains were
of interest, and beyond that, the largest and smallest examples of each race
in each domain could be used to score points for individual and overall
first find achievements.

A total of 74 players participated in the event, with the number of unique
races found by individual competitors ranging from only one, all the way
up to 457! Two categories of rewards were handed out, with the top three
competitors in each field being awarded titles and experience here at the end
of the event.

Top finalists for "Most Prolific Procurement Efforts" (the players who found
the most unique individual race-names):

  1. Hrolg (457 unique races) "Final Authority of Genesis Zoology"
  2. Morrison (456 unique races) "Learned Doctor of Genesis Zoology"
  3. Budwise (438 unique races) "Educated Scholar of Genesis Zoology"

Top finalists for "First-finds" (the players who were the first to find
things in each domain either for unique race, or high/low stats for a
given race):

  1. Zar (128 first-finds) "Swiftest of All Scalpel-Wielders"
  2. Arcon ( 92 first-finds) "Quicksilver Scalpel-Wielder"
  3. Starla ( 86 first-finds) "Speedy Scalpel-Wielder"

An extra honorable-mention goes to Budwise and Morrison, both of whom
ranked in the top 5 of each category.

Unlike past events, there will be no quest experience handed out for these
top finalists. This is due to the fact that the event itself handed out
plentiful amounts of quest experience for first-find accomplishments. Rather,
these finalists will receive their titles, which they will have to enjoy
for the next year's time, and modest rewards in general experience.

All finalists can claim their rewards in the AoE office beneath the Tower
of Realms in Sparkle.

We hope you enjoyed this event!

Regards,
Gorboth, on behalf of the AoE Team

Could the final standings (not just first three) be revealed?

You claim your reward of general experience, and feel more experienced.

You have made insignificant progress since you last logged in.
Reward wasn't big at all.

Wrong. For every 25 or 50 (somewhere in that range) there was slight quest experience.

For every hundred there was a fantastic of general experience. General experience is very different from quest experience.

Also, the there was quest experience rewarded for finding "firsts", which given how the event was handled (announced midday with no real notice) benefited a small number of individuals much more than others.

Please note - this isn't a complaint about the event, per se. I enjoyed it on the whole. Rather, I'm just stating facts.

Suddenly starting the without notice and rewarding first finds IS a complaint from me. Please don't do that again... I mean it probably took some coding to create rewards for first finders, then it's so sad it's just thrown away by not announcing the start date and time. It could have been a mad and really fun rush, and a really nice peak of player activity, that was just wasted... and of course the obvious unfairness of it all that caused annoyance. Sorry to be hard, but it wasnt a good decision at all.

Also, please please be clear about the rewards and how things are scored BEFORE the event starts. I think most people in the necro event thought those on the top list would get some type of reward, not only a title... since that's how events usually work. Better to be clear at the start that people are competing for titles, and all the other rewards are for the individual goals. Last turkey event had extremely unclear rules that made many of us waste time as you could only count your best score from 3 simultaneous events, which was not stated before or during the event. Nor was it stated that points for arch hams did NOT show in the top list for the ham event, making those "live score" top lists inaccurate, which is not so fun to learn afterwards. Since it's very competitive "head to head" kind of event it's important to know how the scoring works for it to be fair, and most importantly FUN.

Much better to be clear about the rules even if it means a little longer post on the board I think. It also saves time since you'll receive less mails and communes form confused players... and less annoyance from disappointed players.

Now some praise:

The rewards for necro event was much more fun han the other events!

I really hope the rewards for future events will be more similar to this one. Maybe the small amount of quest XP you get in the other events is technically more useful... I dont know, but these types of rewards are much more fun, and something you actually notice too. Getting fantastic progress with the new quest XP bar doesnt really tell you anything... how much more than fantastic did I get? How much is a fantastic with the new bar? (Not that much I think?).

Imbuements are fun, and useful amounts of general XP gives us who dont enjoy grinding other ways to get some decent progress as well. And this event even attracted some powergrinders to play!

Stats show 74 people participated, and 54 people found 100+ corpses, which means at least 54 people took it pretty seriously. How is that compared to other events? It felt like at most 10-15 people took Scavenger hunt seriously, and it feels like the numbers are similar for the the recent turkey/ham events. I am just guessing though, but it really felt like the necro event attracted a much bigger crowd. Probably due to the nice rewards?

So please please please... really consider making these types of rewards more than a one-time thing. It would make events so much more fun and competitive I think. And attract more active players. Which is what we want right?? And if you think the rewards are too good. Think again. Getting a good score in events take A LOT of time, for most players it takes much more time than grinding for the same amount of XP. I think if I spent the same amount of time grinding as I did on the ham and scavenger quest combined I would probably be legend by now. (And I am long distance from it currently). So a few fantastics and a few imbues as reward (or similar) isn't really that much... I actually think the rewards for the top finishers should be even greater than that... but one step at a time...:)
