PC Gamer Continued!

Esteemed Fellow Genesis Enthusiasts!

I am very happy to share with you official word that, indeed, the PC Gamer
article "skipped the pond," as they say, and has been additionally published
in this month's (just released) issue of PC Gamer in the United States. This
is fantastic news! Data are not available on the readership of this or that
version of the magazine, but everyone (the author included) that I have
spoken with agree that the US edition has many more readers than the UK
edition in which we have previously been published.

I got hints that this was happening midweek, when I saw on the PC Gamer
site that the new US edition was coming out, and I saw an article titled
"Genesis" on the table of contents. But, today, I was able to purchase three
copies of the magazine from the local bookstore, and - sure enough - it is
true. We are multi-continent!!

We did not see any kind of massive bump in players or effect that could be
attributed to the UK release, and so I do not necessarily anticipate anything
like that this time, either. Rather, what I believe is that this type of
feature will establish us in the minds of people worldwide as *THE* most
consequential and famous Mud currently going. Yes, a few other muds have
larger playerbases, but none besides us have been given this kind of an
introduction to popular culture.

Genesis, for most intents and purposes, is now not only the original LPMUD,
it is the most famous of ANY mud of all time.

It is, in fact, such a huge accomplishment that I kind of can't process it.
We always wanted to make the game more accessible to modern players, and
worked hard to do that for more than a decade. I thought that maybe, maybe
one day someone who writes for PC Gamer might notice us, and maybe mention
us in passing as something they tried and thought was kind of cool. But ...
this?? I never actually imagined this. It was too impossible to actually
think would be something to shoot for.

But, I ramble. I only ramble when I'm happy.

I am happy.

I hope you are happy, too. There is still much work to do to get Genesis
to the point we all want it to be at in terms of the best we can offer for
multi-layered gameplay with different types of fun for different types of
people, for fair play and good balance for all concerned, for well-supported
roleplay and deep strategic options for guilds and intrigue ... but these
things remain goals we will hang onto, and work toward. For now, let's be
sure to recognize what we have accomplished. We did this together - and I
do not take for granted the wonderful community we have become. So many of
you are endlessly helpful and welcoming with your work on the ntell line,
and take the time to collaborate and cheer on your small wizard workforce
when you get the chance. We are all richly blessed.

I can only imagine what the next 10 years will bring! :-)

Finally, and on a very fun note, it seems we have stirred even the slumber of
the mighty founders. Tintin, my predecessor as Keeper, returned to Genesis
the other day, and we had a wonderful time catching up - he who had been in
charge of the game for twice as long as I have. It was so good to see him
again. And, even Lars himself has said he will return to take a look in on
the old halls of his former endeavor.

These are good times, my friends, and I marvel at what has come to pass. It
has rekindled something in me, and I wonder if we are all feeling that a bit.

And so (without doubt) we proceed ...

Onward, and upward!
G.

Here's a side-by-side of the UK (larger) and US (smaller) covers ...

And then, the covers open to our article - I did a paragraph by paragraph analysis. They reprinted the entire article, almost entirely word for word unchanged. The picture sizes, borders, columns, and margins were fussed-with to make the same amount of copy fit into the smaller physical size of the US version.

And then, finally, here is the really silly (and amazingly awesome) stuff my family got me for my birthday a few weeks ago to celebrate all this crazy stuff. As you can see, my family is RIDICULOUS, but wonderful. :-)

I was PARTICULARLY impressed with the mounted "syntax" experience for a new player in the game. I have that now at my desk at work!!

I want that mounted "syntax" experience!

Got a copy of the UK version winging to Oz. Will be keeping an eye out to see if it ends up in the newsagents here!

I'd consider buying a t-shirt or mug with the logo if the proceeds went toward upkeep of the game.

Good idea there Mers, perhaps an idea for next fundraiser, if one is needed too. I'd take a t-shirt, mug & badge saying "Proud denizen of the Donut - Join me at genesismud.org today!" :-)
