About the recent unexpected Armageddon

Post by Cherek » 25 Aug 2020 16:11

Code: Select all

Greetings,

As some of you noticed, there was an unexpected Armageddon a
few hours ago. The reason for the crash is a quite unusual
one. What happened was that, after a bunch of jokes on
Discord about if it would be possible for a player to crash
the game, two players, for some absurd reason, decided it
would be a good idea to actually try to make it happen.

Their plan was to buy massive amounts of messengers (thousands),
and dropping them in the same room. After spending tons of money
on messengers they eventually did crash the game.

We will of course attempt to fix this loophole, so it will not be
possible to crash the game in this way again. I also apologize for
my own and Greneth's involvement in this, since we took part in
the Discord chat yesterday and joked about some sort of "Come and
try crash our game"-event as a promotional tool to draw in more
players. Obviously we were not serious, which I am sure everyone
in the chat also clearly understood. Not in a million years did I
think anyone would actually try to crash the game "for fun", but
clearly I was wrong...

If anyone lost any items due to this crash, please contact the
AoP team and/or me and we will try to restore anything lost.

And to the two of you who did this, it was a seriously lame
move, causing lots of extra work for us wizards, and messing
up the game for the other players who were playing at the time
of the crash, or indirectly suffered due to it.

Oddly this post didn't show up as "unread", so I'll post this reply so it shows up.

Well, maybe it was just bughunt ? They told it may be possible and you just claim it is not.
In some companies finding bugs is quite profitable. Maybe you should not be angry but
think about policy ? They prove there is a bug afetr someone decided theres none.
I'll give them ingame reward not punish them.

Nobody said the game was uncrashable? Unless you know something I dont. I at some point said that it's harder for players to crash the game than it is for wizards (which is true), but I don't think anyone said it could not be done by players. I definitely thought it was possible, but I didn't think anyone would try to do it. To my knowledge this is the first time (at least in a very long while) that a player has attempted to crash the game. Because... why would they?

What you are talking about sounds more like stress testing, which can be fine, but then it needs to be done in a controlled way, and not on a live game where a crash will cause a lot of issues for both other players and wizards. A much better way is to contact us if you discover something that you think could be abused, or used, to harm the game.

And about punishments, nobody has been punished, and if you want to give the crashers a reward, go for it. Most other players who have contacted me lately have been upset and asked if it's okay to kill them over this, but sure, reward them if you want. :)

The good thing to come out of this was the new rule about crashing the game on purpose. Hopefully it will deter future incidents like this one.

There is a pillory in Avenir. Names. We can handle the rest.

We had a bughunt once, you got tiny mechanical bugs as a reward if I recall.

That's not a bad idea for an event. Although our main issue isn't finding bugs, it's finding people who want to (and have the time and skill) to fix them. Maybe we could have a wizard-event, where wizards compete to fix bugs and typos... the winner is instantly promoted to admin! Although, I am not sure that would deter or encourage wizards to participate... hmm...
