Finwe - A Remembrance ...

Remembering Finwe ...

Twenty-six years ago Rohim, one of the old Genesis founders from Chalmers
University in Sweden decided to take a shot on a young mortal who thought it
would be fun to become a wizard. And so it was that in June of 1996 a flash
of light around the realms announced that Finwe had been added to the ranks
of the immortals.

Like all young wizards at the time, Finwe had to swallow hard and know that
he had just given up the mortal life, for in those days there was a mighty
cost to donning the wizard robes. First, you would have to learn the game
and grow your mortal to champion level (or near it.) Then, you would have to
impress the wizards with good behavior and interest. Then, you would have
to make the ultimate sacrifice, and give that mortal and all its experience
away to transform him into the wizard you would become. And like so many,
Finwe made that sacrifice and embarked on his new path.

Some wizards are science-minded code-wielders who can program thirteen brands
of chess to be played by npcs, but who don't have stores to tell. But some
wizards are lovers of fantasy lore, have stories to tell, and learn code
along the way to help them get those things out there. Finwe was more the
latter kind (as am I.) He took his time building his repertoire of coding
knowledge, and grew slowly but surely into a productive wizard.

He worked closely with Jaypeg, who was then Liege of Shire, and was
eventually awarded the rank of Steward to that Domain to assist his Liege
by the then Archwizard of Code, Shiva. Working in this role for over a year
his good work eventually gained him the trust of the Administration of
the game, and in July of 1999 the Keeper of the Game, Tintin, made Finwe
Archwizard of Players.

Serving as AoP is among the greatest tests in Genesis, and Finwe found that
creating was far more fun to him than was Administration and maintenance for
mortals, and so he would soon return to his work as, primarily, a creator
of content for the game.

Finwe created many, many things in Genesis. As has been said before of his
work, to list it all would require that one track it all down and catalog
it. That is beyond my powers, but I will relate one story of my own. When
I set about to create my own project of the Tutorial for Genesis, Finwe had
similar interests in creating a new zone for young players to learn the
ropes of the game. We worked at the same time, and while I was creating
the lands of Silverdell on Tutori Isle, he was creating the woodland town
and many tour quests of Greenoaks. Both of these areas are, to this day,
some of the first experiences of players as they come into Genesis. And at
that time Greenoaks was important indeed, for Sparkle had not yet been
recoded to include any of the Carlsan quests to teach you how to do things
or find things. I can attest to the good energy, creativity, collaboration,
and enthusiasm Finwe had for what he liked to do for Genesis in that time
period - right around 2005.

Finwe also created numerous guilds, including the much anticipated option
to play a member of the Drow race in Genesis. And he managed both the Shire
and the Faerun domain at different periods of time.

One thing I am immensely grateful for was Finwe's efforts, long before
most other wizards took it upon themselves to do so, to work long and hard
hours to create magic map content for huge areas of the game. As you walk
around Genesis, and see yourself moving from room to room on the magic
map readout, know that quite often you are traversing the text-drawings
that Finwe created - some of the earliest maps that were made.

We all play this game together, and the game itself is often what captivates
us. But more than anything, what keeps people coming back to Genesis is
the relationships we form with people, and the things we teach and share
with those we find here. Finwe tought quite a few people how to be wizards,
and was himself responsible for doing for many others what Rohim had done
for him back in 1996. And, Finwe absolutely loved hobbits and all things
related to the Shire in Tolkien's world. Like any good hobbit, Finwe would
be fond of lineage, and family trees.

I would like, then, to take a bit of space to share a bit of Finwe's family
tree. Here in chronological order, from first to last, are all of the
wizards who Finwe himself waved his magic wand and transferred from mortal
to immortal life, setting them on new paths to join him and the rest of us
who work to create the game.

         -------------------------------------------------------
Players wizzed by Finwe from 1999-2020
         -------------------------------------------------------
         Neo (1999) Morrigan (2002) Zoimli (2007)
         Odin (2000) Palmer (2002) Leia (2008)
         Taveren (2000) Alara (2004) Clyptas (2017)
         Skylark (2000) Altrus (2005) Urion (2017)
         Talemir (2001) Tigerlily (2005) Raymundo (2020)
         Arandir (2001) Toby (2005) Johnny (2020)
         Kesor (2001) Kehr (2006)
         Nanja (2002) Quaid (2006)
         Quin (2002) Mozart (2006)
         -------------------------------------------------------

Quite a few of these wizards went on to create numerous good works them-
selves, and a few went on to great heights! Arandir became Liege of
Sparkle and created the Dragon Order, for example, and many of these
others created things that began with that wave of Finwe's wand.

Now, as we all must, Finwe has passed on. His light has travelled over
the great Sea to the far shores beyond our reckoning, and we see him not
among us any longer. It is a loss to we who remain, and using the words
that Tolkien gave us... "and though in all lands love is now mingled
with grief, it grows perhaps the greater.” I will remember Finwe with much
love and admiration, and I would like to send him off with another of
the poems he loved by his beloved Middle Earth author.

The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
                     Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way,
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say.

Rest well, friend.
G.

Mmmmmm ... pie ...
