Agree totally.
Its not over the top in the LOTR or the hobbit, he is revealing only certain parts relevant to the current story. It could be a bit overwhelming in the Silmarillion where the story jumps around and one may not be connected to the next and your brain is trying to remember who did what before and what the relevance of things is.

I also found getting used to this maybe spoiled some of the more "lightweight" books for me a little bit.
