Sword balance

Post by Tarax the Terrible » 16 Mar 2010 00:04

Did some research a while back (wow 5 years ago!).
Things have changed a little since then but here it is, a good starting point for discussions I guess.
For the purpose of this analysis the properties of the weapon have been broken
up into five main categories. Please note that I have made no distinction as
to whether the property was due to a physical requirement or magical
enchantment. The categories are as follows:

*WIELDING REQUIREMENTS
- These need to be met for the weapon to be successfully wielded, also covered
are any punishments for failure.

*SPECIAL ABILITIES
- It is this category that details anything that is special about the weapon
compared to its unremarkable counter parts.

*LIMITATIONS
- If there are any limitations that must be complied with in order for the
special abilities to occurr these are lists here.

*PENALTIES
- If using the weapon has any down sides these are listed here.

*AVAILABILITY
- This is an important factor to be considered, it estimates the frequency
with which the item can be found in the realms but also gives an indidication
as to any groups of players who may be hampered in being able to try to get
the weapon in the first place.

Note: Weapons which in some way penalise or exclude part of the player population
are underlined top AND bottom. The fact/facts that have caused this classifcation
are highlighted with an exclamation mark. The VERY best weapons are also specially
high-lighted with asterix's.

*Jewel Encrusted Sabre details updated, it has wielding requirements which
appear to exclude all BDA soldiers!
*Thin Green Sabre details updated, it Has no know biased requirements and the
weapon DOES Dull!
*Azure Rune-Etched Longsword updated, only DA's cannot do the quest it seems.
*Foul Stygion Black Sword updated, failure to wield causes health drop.
*Dull Gray Sabre details added.

SUMMARY:
########
NON DULLING WEAPONS - There currently appears to be six non dulling swords in
the realms. What is very unusual is that all are in some way biased and most
are relatively un-known to the average population. The glistering shortsword
is a prime example, if it is still allowed to exist it is a non-dulling HIGH
Specification magical weapon that those in the know do not even have to kill
anything to gain. The elegant jewel-encrusted sabre is another SEVERE example
in that it is only really ever available to knights. And in the one and only
known occasion where it has fallen into Evil sword users hands, the MYTH sized
general of the BDA was NOT ABLE TO WIELD IT!!! Tom's sword is quite simply
not available for evils to wield, yet a neutral person who kills him can pick
it up and go killing for hours without stopping. The azure sword is a quest
item, but yet can be obtained repeatedly, and is not accesible to evil that
anyone knows of. The FBB is the only sword mentioned on this elite list that
is protected by a guild, and one that evils tend to try and stay on side with,
so unless the MM give the sword to an evil player, which they have no history
of doing, it is very unlikely they will get the sword.

None dulling weapons are valuable to anyone, in terms of kill exp gathering
killing with no down time is a huge advantage. They are even more valuable to
guilds who cannot effectively sharpen, but that is another issue. These
weapons have their place, and it is right that they are made as such. But
they need to be the most carefully balanced out of all categories! To exclude
any part of the population from being able to acquire and use them will
greatly tip the scales of balance.

(This bias of the glistering shortsword does not have a gategory hence -1)

Example Users.

1) A Holy Aligned Dwarven Knight
--------------------------------
Non Dulling Weapons Available = 6#Holy Blade, Azure Runed Etched, Ancient runed
shortsword, Kitiara's Sabre, FBB and the Glistering (I have seen Knights
wielding it)

Exlcuded from using = 1.5#1 = Foul Sword, 0.5 = Crimson Steel Longsword
They apparently exclude themselves from using the JBS by CHOICE, as it is a
self imposed restriction it is not counted.

Bonuses for using = 3#Holy Blade, Solamnic Broadsword, Encrusted Broadsword

2) A Neutral Aligned Elven Shadow Union Warrior
-----------------------------------------------
Non Dulling Weapons Available = 4#Holy Blade, Azure Runed Etched, Ancient runed
shortsword, FBB, (Not counting glistering as I have not seen any using it)

Exlcuded from using = 5.25#Light blue-tinted longsword, holy silver longsword,
Pure snow white sword, Foul Sword, 0.5 = Crimson Longsword, 0.75 = Holy Blade

Bonuses for using = 3#Runnie, Khopesh and Falcata (I refer to this as a bonus
because they must be sober anyway and the fact that these swords only reward
the sober lessens demand for them and makes them more avialable to them)

3) A Holy Aligned Goblin Calian
-------------------------------
Non Dulling Weapons Available = 5#Holy Blade, Azure Runed Etched, Ancient runed
shortsword, Kitiara's Sabre, FBB (Not counting glistering as I have not seen
any using it, but have seen calians using sabre)
Exlcuded from using = 1.5#1 = Foul Sword, 0.5 = Crimson Steel Longsword
(Actually while preparing this document I saw a calian wielding the foul sword
but I expect that they have got evil for the purpose)
Bonuses for using = 1#Holy Blade

4) A Damned Aligned Goblin BDA Soldier
----------------------------------------------------------------
Non Dulling Weapons Available = 1#FBB (Not counting glistering as I have not
seen any using it)
Exlcuded from using = 8.95#ELEGANT JEWEL-ENCRUSTED SABRE, WYRMSLAYER, GREEN-
TINTED LONGSWORD, RUNED LONGSWORD, ANCIENT RUNED SHORTSWORD, PURE SNOW-WHITE
LONGSWORD, HOLY SILVER LONGSWORD, LIGHT BLUE-TINTED LONGSWORD,0.95=HOLY BLADE
Bonuses for using = 1#Crimson Steel Longsword

(Note The figures for the holy blade are different in different cases because
its gets worse the more evil you are. Reported a much bigger swing than in
the likes of the crimson steel longsword)

I dislike this forum. I dislike the amount of information being given away (No offense Tarax.) To me it goes against the idea of exploration of Genesis as here is the info handed to you on a silver platter.

Agree with Chanele though. Mers what good are you contributing to the conversation?

However sword balance is heavily skewed toward goodies, but balance of weapons in general is skewed way to much toward swords. Not enough weapons in the other categories.

An addendum that list goes into detail about guilds being notified and not notified among other things. It is not really entirely accurate, but can give people a misconcieved perception of what is really going on, and also informs on things that people shouldn't really be aware of.

I checked with the wizzies before posting and got all clear if I removed guild info.
I was concious of the issue, but if I have gone too far am happy to change it or be moderated.

Exploration is one thing, but having the knowledge and deciding tactics and how to use it to best advantage is even better.
There is nothing saying sword X is Better than Y in certain circumstance and the list is 5 years out of date.
I think this sort of info in a Wiki will get more people thinking about the equip and wanting to get their hands on it.

So no offence taken, if I go to far please let me know.
Hard to keep perspective sometimes.

Tried to take that sort of info out.
Sorry it was a rush job throwing it up, thought I had got most of that sort of thing out.

Well its not really my decision. I personally hate seeing info like that posted. I think it goes outside the spirit of what I think Genesis is, but that's MY personal opinion. You are perfectly entitled to yours as is the rest of the general population. I learned nothing new from it, I just dislike the general idea. Granted it seems to be the dominating theme for this forum whenever I log into it so no big. If the wizards approved it, then I guess me griping about it solves nothing.
