Oh, I thought it should work fine, seeing how UTF-8 was originally introduced to provide backwards compatibility with ASCII over UTF-16 and 32. It's one of those things that i'd like to see happen but which probably never will. So we're stuck with the current mode of mostly 7-bit ASCII with some ISO-8859-1 thrown in..
