options: echo commands

Two things, one cake, one icing.
Cake
Doing <options echo off> effects nothing. I still see my input commands as well as the output.
Icing
Is there a way to change the color of the input commands, as they are echoed back to me? I'd prefer something neutral, like grey, to the brownish orange that is the default.
