I'm late to the game here, but I'm also catching up on board reading after a time away.
What you're talking about here, Kitriana, has actually been heavily explored for Genesis. Work was being looked at for such an interface, and we even had example graphics and buttons in place on our tests. Tapakah was a big proponent of it, and did much of the idea development for it himself. I was going to hire Denis Loubet to do the artwork for various characters, etc, that you could see as you were picking races, etc.
The client for actual gameplay took precedence, and this ended up not getting further development. It is definitely possible to do.
