Herbal Wiki on Website?

Post by gorboth » 07 Sep 2010 08:52

Imagine if, on the webpage, there existed a list of the "short descriptions" for each herb in the game. The list would *not* include the names of the herbs. Clicking the herb description would display a "long description" of what examining the herb revealed if you possessed the skill to identify it, just like visiting an herbalist in the game might show you. This would mean that you would not need to visit herbalists or have the skill required to identify herbs - you would just need to visit the webpage. Of course, if you had two herbs with the same "short description" you would have the potential to still get it wrong if you lacked herbalism skill yourself.

Would this be something good for the game? Please vote, then comment!

Definitely good I think!

There exists atlast one similar documents on the web (with names and descs and usages of most herbs) and I gotta say without them I'd be lost. So instead of having "illegal" stuff maybe not everyone knows of i think this is a great idea.

Just as the quest hints was, made questing way more doable without quest-docs and thus perhaps eliminated the need for some of the docs. Atleast it did for me!

Voted NO. Commenting:

Herbalism skill (which is TAXED!) allows you to learn by examining the herb what it's used for (at times) - if you lack it, you just found/bought a herb you know little/nothing about. Also - herb usage and effects CHANGE now and then (recodes - yes).

Herb lore is VERY useful in Genesis and such a freebie as you mentioned would just take away anything current "specialists" (those who know their way around in herbs) learned over the years and give it to anyone for no price.

Why? What is the positive thing in that? Surely not the will to give EVERYBODY the same knowledge about such intricate things as herbs?

Please say "No", cause the next thing you should do if that would be the aim, would be a complete weapon and armour and item list (with specials features and requirements, maybe even hit/pen/ac?), followed by potions (with contents) and mobs (with specials, stats, eq, locations, etc.).
I say "NO" to WoW-wiki Genesis-style.

The intention behind such Wiki would be providing everyone with the same feature, and not only the smart client trigger developers. The point is that you can in general track and save responses of herbalists in your own data files, and trigger lookups from the local database when needed. The web Wiki will act as such client capability.

Same can be said about people who launch a macro to compare/sminspect a weapon/armor a gazylion times to accurately place it among other investigated weapons.

Is that what Genesis spirit is about, or are we still hoping to NOT use numbers (even if players for themselves can create any given macros that turn Gen into a Dicku-MuD) ...?

Where were numbers mentioned?

As of inspecting and comparing items a gazillion number of times, that method has a couple of fundamental flows that may lead to fatally wrong assumptions. There are publicly available smiths that do classify the swords by their qualities, into five or six levels. IMHO such classification _may_ (but definitely also may not) appear on a Wiki.

Back to herbs, consider someone who is playing Genesis via online Flash client. We're just saying, use the browser instead of saving herbalist's replies. I may add that current herb identification is somewhat ambiguous; I would support top herbalist to see things shop herbalists cannot.

We understand that there are pros and cons, that's why the poll has been created, otherwise we'd just put the Wiki on. :)

I agree that providing "legal" ways to do things people can already do in questionable ways (sharing info out of game/scripting/etc) is good, because it decreases the gap between those who have the ability and inclination to do things in such ways and those who don't.
I don't think "giving away" all the herb info on the website is the best way though. This would make the herbalism skill and herbalists who identify things for you fairly redundant.
I don't have a problem in letting the game "remember for you" the info you get from herbalists though. Either this could be an ability everyone had, or provided by an item that could be purchased somewhere... Or...
How about making it an ability for the Gardeners?
This is a very underdeveloped guild, and as it stands now, only really useful for people who are already experts on the effects of herbs. From what I can see, Smiths is far more generally-useful.
But, gardeners already automatically track what herbs they have found. How about also automatically remembering descriptions given by NPC-herbalists. Have the info then repeated either when just examining an already-researched herb, or with another command. And maybe add an ability to search your herblist by effect (healing/mana/whatever/etc).

An ability to remember herbalist's reply makes things indistinguishable from the info appearing on the web site.

The herbalism skill helps player not only to identify the herb but mostly to find it. But we must consider enhancing both abilities of high skill herbalism and Gardeners guild. Maybe just like Smiths can forge things, Gardeners should be able to grow herbs.

There is also another matter, that doesn't really belong to this topic, but something we also considered and just hadn't time to implement: getting rid of double skill taxation.

Like automatic herbmap-making?

I'd love if someone posted a "how-to" on making a client automatically make herbmaps.
Would be pretty useful, plus save alot of fairly boring dataregistrering for many people, I'd imagine. :)

Anyways, I think it'd be nice to have some more information readily available, if we want to draw in new players.

and you reply about:

imagine what ... I wrote about just that ...

back on topic - does this idea happen to be yours, Tapakah? cause it sure feels like it, considering your replies (their timing, content and approach) ... if you want someone's honest, personal opinion, why are you trying to judge it? or was it supposed to spark applause only? if that's the case - I'm sorry to have a somewhat different view on this topic

let's assume there is an I WIN herb in the game, but it requires best available herbalism skill + skill improving items + 1% chance - how many people would script-herb their butts off and totally go out of their current way to get it, instead of doing what they do now?

what's the exact bonus in having high herbalism skill (without being a Gardener), if you want to make the actual herb lore available to everybody and their aunt?
shit, I need a herb for x and y - phew, just download the whole page content and ctrl+f for the correct word in the long desc ...

why should all herb scrolls and books written in the guilds' libraries suddenly loose all reason for existance? I find them pretty good RP (having written some myself)
