I can easily assure you, we would love to see fresh faces knocking on the gates of Minas Morgul.

Handling much of the recruitment for the Morgul Mages, I give whoever that applies a fair shot, even past failures (I'm too generous) if they can convince me that they are sincere.

"Friends" and "foes" alike, they will be tested equally. :)

be Careful, drip gets poisoned at the drop of a hat.
though being in a potion heavy guild may help drip.
Can morgul mages even get poisoned?

T.T
(got ivy'd and bitten by insects yesterday)

A guild that is immune to poison sounds great......

As i became more used to the game, I want to share my newbie opinions.

Creating a character before tutorial and putting it in a world kept me playing the game. It was a little painful at first, as i didn't know what was my purpuse in the game. I remember myself ntell'ing "for how long can i improve my skills?". At that time i wasn't aware of the money reality :) ı also told the game to my gamer friends, but most of them kept asking me "what am i gonna do here?" during tutorial and actually, they haven't finish the tutorial finding it hard to interact with the enviroment. Maybe there could be a sign telling how to get tasks exactly and the general purpose of the game.

Also while choosing the race, it would be great if the users are given information about each one. If i wanted to learn races benefits above each other, typing "help races" and seeing all races major features would be very handy during the creation.

Which confused me most at the beginning was the difference between ntell and say. It took a little time for me to figure out who hears me when i type say or ntell. Well, i might have misunderstood too, as my native language is not English.

Btw, I want to thank all the newbie helpers. I find them really sincere and they made me wanting to play the game.
P.S. Sorry for my English, i know it sucks!

I think what everyone has to remember, or know, is that you cannot rush things in every guild.

Some places don't just have 5-10 tasks you need to do/solve, and then you are in for all it has to offer.
You need patience, and some places more than others.

I don't much remember how it was to be an impatient teenager, but I know all about being an impatient "adult"! :D
But some things are worth waiting for, and in the RP heavy guilds, it is like "Lord of the Rings".. the journey is the important and interesting part.

I am not saying that it isn't interesting or good to be a full member of those guilds, it is just something else.
You also don't build a house, expecting it to last, if you don't lay down a foundation.
The long time as a novice/cleric/servant is the foundation.

Hey, thanks for the feedback. It's very valuable to get to know what completely new players feel about the game, and what we could do better. We're constantly trying to make things more user friendly.

I definitely agree about the help race thing in character creation. Actually, we've been considering making it possible to switch race as much as you want in the tutorial, since as you say, it's hard to know which race to pick so early on anyway.

"What am I supposed to do?" is also a question people ask a lot on the ntell. My idea is to try to immidiately involve players in the quest with the vampire. So they get a goal right away. You think that's a good idea?

As for basic commands, say, and ntell, I've tried to explain it on the webpage on the "guide" section. Not sure how many check it though. Did you?

Well, I discovered the guide page while searching for triggers, so it was too late for me   but i agree that giving the main quest to the new players before they ask themselves "so what now?" would be very helpful.

For once, I feel uniquely equipped to post about a topic with something to offer. My kids and husband have all recently started playing Genesis, so they are definitely newbies seeing it for the first time.

Problems that they have encountered:
1. not having any idea where the common board is
2. not being able to find other newbies to team with them for the gigantic mountain lion and the vampire - the other newbies all seem to be pretty quiet in there
3. going to the store to buy a backpack, but when they type 'list' it shows no backpacks even if there are backpacks in stock. Perhaps there could be a sign in the store? (Maybe there is and they never read it, in which case maybe it needs to be more obvious.)
4. the mail reader is not necessarily intuitive, and the mail help is a little hard to understand for someone who is new to mail here. A sign with simple mail commands (maybe even a sample of a mail message to look at) might be useful. The ~q, **, entering the number of the message... those things are all a little hard to understand at first.
5. using the web client, it would be useful to explain the magic map - if the browser window is too narrow someone might not even know that a map is even there.

Thanks Ives.

1. Good point. The message you get when there's new notes at the common should probably say where it is. At least for newbies in the tutorial.

2. Not sure if we can do something but try to attract more newbies and hope some of them are more social. I am suspecting most are just as confused themselves. We could of course create our own newbies and pretend to be newbies and walk around socialising, but I dont know, that will be "fake" anyway. Or you could have official helper newbies who work like newbie helpers but are actually there as characters, but I dont know if that's fun either? Maybe better to find things out on your own or hopefully find other _real_ newbies to hang out with eventually.

3. That sounds weird? The shop has a tutorial sign about selling stuff. I think it's pretty clear? Could you describe more in detail what the issue there was?

4. Oh yeah, I get tons of mails about newbies not being able to read mail. Gorboth's working on going through all tutorial signs, the one in the post office does not mention how to read mails so, yeah. We're definitely gonna need to make that part easier to understand. Sending mails in a text game is always gonna involve typing some special characters to control. Although I must admit the ~ sign confused me when I started playing Genesis too. It's very Unix-based, and I dont think most of our players are familiar with old Unix commands. Commands like !send or !quit would probably be much more logical. I wonder if that would be possible. I'll ask Mercade.:)

5. Yeah... I too think some miss out on the communication and map window, which is too bad. It's Cotillions and Eowul's project. Maybe you can write about it in the web client, bugs and feature requests section on the forum? It's always better if the request comes directly from a player I think!

I thought about the "helping in person" issue in the tutorial. I remember we used to have a Guest account in Genesis. Anyone could log in and do whatever they wanted with him. Naturally, that was abused and eventually removed. I wonder though if we couldn't allow it or a version of it back, kind of like a jr system for players. So Snowrosejr could log in, be a beginner (or whatever) in the tutorial, and be able to help folks directly.
