Identifying magic type used on you

Just an idea, but since we have imbuements for resist for every type of magic.
Would it be possible for the game to tell you what magic is in the air when spells are cast and you are the target. Or in the vicinity.

Eg.

Code: Select all

Gilbert points at you and says burn, you are consumed by holy fire.
Your senses prickle as you detect fire magicks being employed against you!

Code: Select all

Gilbert curses the foul zombie, a patch of searing light opens up on the ground beneath its feet!
You feel the curious sensation particular to being in close proximity to life magicks!

Code: Select all

The black dragon rears back its head and takes a deep breath.
You are harmed by the dragons breath.
The bitter tastes of acid magicks catch in the back of your throat!

Code: Select all

The gems on your torque burn with a sudden heat.
You feel a rushing breeze typical of air magicks at work!
Don't see any downside to this, helpful for npcs.
When it comes to guilds I don't think its a big secret being revealed.
They are revealing more by using the spell in front of you.
Be it trusting you or trying to nuke you.

It could be a good idea for a permanent quest reward.
As the idea is a little similar to draconian names quest, after you complete it you see the world a little differently.

Tarax,

This is a cool idea, yes, but I do not think it would ever simply want to be automatic. This is the sort of thing that should perhaps happen if you have master++ levels of spellcasting skill plus sufficient wisdom stat. Or, perhaps, if you had purchased and quaffed a potion of magic detection and its effects were still active. By no means would I ever want such things to just be cheaply known.

If your a master spell caster its info you most likely already know. So that's not a very practical requirement.

What about magic detection available as an imbuement effect, different levels improved feedback.

Perhaps another more palatable approach would be their always being feedback messages when any equip you are using has a counter effect to an attack. So gear that already does this really well is Sybarus ermie robe, snake ring, amulets.

Aside from those I can't think of an example where u know if something is helping u or not. Other than if u can tell by the damage output.

Then u can learn by trial and error.

Magic using NPCs could maybe give better feedback too. Like krynn dragon breath, it seems to check tank for resistance then roll damage if there was resistance on tank all other attackers are exposed to less damage. No resistance everyone behind tank gets equal blast too. Could be a nice cinematic sequence for that. But also showing how item x is lessening the damage from the breath

Sure, but that does make sense to me. You have to get friendly with a magic user who can share info they have about magic they have detected. Otherwise you are just a dumb fighter getting burned/frozen/electrocuted in their heavy armour and weeping uncontrollably. As it should be.

Weeping warrior: "Hey, when the Mega-Skunk of the Stankbog uses its tail attack, is that poison or acid?"

Pampered Priest: "Yes, we discovered that many moons ago. Carry my groceries back to the tower and I'll let you in on it."

Kind of agree :-)

The problem is more with the "old" code, where a fireball doesnt deal fire damage, but damage based on your armour! But it shall hopefully disappear in the future. Newer descriptions does seem to be better in regards to the style and type.

K so if I block my ears to the harsh realities that this will probably never happen that just leaves one question.

When are the potions of Magic detection arriving in Palanthas?

Cus of course a potion makes anything possible...
Lol the brains of the caster types.

Time for the dumb warrior types to rise up and overthrow their masters!
FRRRRRRREEEEEEDOOOMMMMM!!!!
Carry ur own groceries u wimp.
