Casting darkvision in the dark should be a no brainer, right???

Depends on components etc.
If its complicated and you cannot see then not necessarily.
But since you can cast it before it is dark...

Pretty strange some of the guilds that get Dark Vision.
Thinking of a melee combat guild that gets it.
Why?

Ah well.

what if there are no components needed?
It just seems a bit silly to me that when everything around you goes
dark, you can't cast a non-component using spell to see again.

Terrible.

Should one be able to light an oil lamp (highly complex mechanism) in a dark room.
Or consider getting your magnifying glass out to catch the sunbeams and light a torch in utter darkness.

Most interesting complexities, not only depending on spell components I guess ;-)

Well Knuffle...

casting a NON-component darkvision is a little different than lighting a lamp or torch. Neither is spellcraft yet people are able to do such things in the dark. I'm talking about being able to waggle my fingers and speak an incantation and I should be able to see.

If you need light to do that, then what is the point of having the spell in the first place?

I have idea for a small improvement to make it perfect

1. You cant cast darkvision in darkness
2. If you cast the darkvision in the light you become blind for 30 minutes

Keep your potions in a pack. Due to the changes to darkvision most pack items weren't changed so you can simpy "empty pack" in darkness and remove whatever item you want to give you darkvision. Say its a bandana...

"empty pack"
"remove all"
"wear bandana"
"adjust bandana"
*wear all*

Was a pain in the ass when I had to rely on darkness for people who realized it but its a simple fix to your problem.

He's talking about the spell. Not an item.
What's the point of taking infravision items when you have the spell? Might either give the spell the ability to be cast in darkness or remove it completely.

his specific guild at the time required a potion to cast darkvision. Had he just used the empty pack command he'd have had the items ready for him. If the spell needs a component to be cast and you can't see the component it shouldn't be able to be cast.
