Blacksmiths

Post by Rhaegar » 23 May 2010 09:18

I guess it's been raised many times over, but one more time can't make it any worse.

Some things I'd like to see in the Smiths guild:

- melting different kinds of weapons/armours to get steel, mithril and other metal bars (producing better quality weapons and armour, even on par with some of the best items found in the game) - this of course, available only to the accomplished smiths
- engraving runes/letters into the items
- adorning them with gems
- forged weapons getting special, unique hit descriptions to discern them from the more mundane equipment and to make them more appealing in combat (I mean some really cool, nice and long descriptions, like every hit would be a special attack in case of the best quality forged items)

Edit: I even started creating some descriptions myself. Please let me know what you think.

Code: Select all

;
; weapon hit descriptions for items forged by Blacksmiths
;

This are the special hit descriptions, as seen by the person
wielding a weapon crafted by Blacksmiths. In order to keep
it simple, there are descriptions presented for each type of
damage (impaling, slashing, bludgeoning) instead of weapon
type.
The amount of hit descriptions for each type of damage is
the same as for standard descriptions, allowing for easier
supposition. With the only difference being special killing
blow descriptions, chosen randomly for each damage type.

Notes:
enemy = target description
weapon = weapon description
bodypart = target bodypart
hhi = him/her/it, his/her/its etc.

;; impale

; hits

You launch a quick thrust at <enemy>, but <hhi> notices
it and moves away, your <weapon> just nicking <hhi>
<bodypart>.

You take a quick step towards <enemy>, aiming at <hhi>
with an upward thrust, managing to graze <hhi> with
your <weapon>.

<enemy> misses a step and tumbles. While <hhi> rolls
forward in an attempt to get out of your reach, you
launch a series of jabs with your <weapon>, scoring
a hit or two.

You lunge forward with your <weapon>, aiming at
<enemy>'s <bodypart> and manage to stab <hhi>,
spilling blood on the ground.

You catch <enemy> with a powerful stab to the <bodypart>,
your <weapon> causing severe damage.

You stab your <weapon> deeply into <enemy>'s <bodypart>,
causing <hhi> to scream in pain.

Your <weapon> lances right through <enemy>'s <bodypart>,
drawing a lot of blood and making <hhi> face pale with
pain and shock.

; kill

Despite <enemy>'s desperate attempts to defend <hhi>self
you press forward and impale <hhi> with your <weapon>.
<enemy>'s limbs twitch in final death spasms and <hhi>
body goes numb, dropping slowly to the ground.

<enemy> suddenly stops cold and stares down in disbelief
at your <weapon> sticking out of <hhi> chest.
You help yourself pull it out with your foot, letting
the spray of blood out of the wound.

;; slash

; hits

; kill

You powerfully slice <enemy>'s stomach with your <weapon>,
causing blood and guts to flow out.
<enemy> drops to <hhi> knees in a pool of blood and desperately
tries to put the entrails back in, before falling lifeless
on <hhi> face.

With a mighty chop of your <weapon>, you hit <enemy> in the
head, splitting it in half and sending blood spraying all
over the place.
<enemy> stands unmoving for a brief moment, staring with
lifeless eyes, before slowly collapsing to the ground.

;; bludgeon

; hits

; kill

You repeatedly smash <enemy>'s head with your <weapon>,
causing bone fragments and brain matter to fly around.
You continue to hit on <enemy>'s head even as <hhi> drops
to <hhi> knees. When you finally stop, <enemy>'s body
falls to the side.

As <enemy> attempts a last, desperate attack, you move
in and mightily swing your <weapon> upwards and hear
a crack of bones as you hit <hhi> jaw, breaking the
neck and changing face into a bloody mess.
<enemy's> body falls backwards, spraying blood

I think that most smiths will agree with you on this.

The unique hits would be a cool small thing that could maybe be added quickly.
Might be able to have different types of hits for different modifications to the weapons, serrated edges, tempered steel being unyielding + ringing when parried, more flexible steels being "whippy", fullers for blood gushing strikes.

As you say it comes up relatively often. Check out this thread for so other interesting discussion about where craft guilds might be heading in the future.
