Donating/sacrificing items

Post by Booger » 14 Jul 2011 11:35

Something I've seen in other muds, so this is not an original idea, but might still be interesting:

When you're out killing things, it's easy to get encumbered and so it's not too uncommon to leave things behind.
Instead of just leaving them there, how about a possibility to "donate <item>"?
An item donated would immediately be transported to a random charity box, for the benefit of lowbies.
This would be some magical command, available in the whole world, given by the kind immortals/deities in order to help lowbies.

If you don't feel the item is useful for you nor for lowbies, you can instead "sacrifice <item>". This would just destroy it, without anything else happening.

Standard checks, naturally (can't donate/sacrifice items that are kept/nodrop/...).

Sacrifice would eliminate the use for trashcans (anyone using them?) and be a way to get rid of poisonous herbs, broken gear etc without dropping them everywhere in the world (major bonus would be a cleaner world and probably a bit lower memory usage).

Donating will probably increase the number of items in charity boxes. And probably make the stuff you find there a lot more varied. And if donated items end up in a random box, you'll get a bit of stuff in every box - not just in the Sparkle one. Might make the boxes _very_ filled (which could be controlled by eg having a percentage of donated items destructed, or boxes limited, so too many items would mean the oldest ones in the box would be "lost" (destructed).

Not sure about how much this will affect things, and if the result will be a wanted one. But thought it worth thinking about.

Any idea of how to counter "donating" countless heaps of gear, so a lowbie can just spam box->shop->bank->box and the killer on the "create corpses" end of the line doesn't have to bother about it?
Quality checks based on item price won't work.

Donated items can't be sold, so shouldn't be possible to abuse that.

You can, of course, donate all copper coins you don't want to bother carrying around, and hope that the heap you donate ends up in a box where some lowbie friend of yours can find it. Don't see any major abuse possibility for this either, but ot will probably bring a load of copper coins into every box if people start donating that too. Which will make lowbies happy. Whether this will be good for the game, I'll leave to you to decide. If bad, donating money would need to be handled (not allowed or causing donated money to be removed).

in support: the currently existing silver ingot could be copied, altered and implemented (let's say - a copper version?) to be used for that, maybe? instead of only cleaning away the corpse, also transfer all items still in the corpse to the boxes?

Maybe you could list things to the auction house from within any bank in the realms? As to the donating, maybe being able to donate from inside any shop?

Donating from shop won't help, most of people will prefer to sell.
