Newbie Pin Rules

Fellow Genesis Enthusiasts,

I've made some changes to the newbie pin to help clarify the acceptable
use of the <ntell> line. The command <nrules> has been added which will
print a detailed description of what the intended use of the line is and
what will be considered unacceptable if seen in the logs.

Not everyone will agree with my rationale, but I hold dearly to some of
the founding principles on which this game has stood from the earliest
years. Among those principles is that of upholding immersion insofar as
we can do so. For the same reason Genesis chooses to use words such as
"veteran" rather than display "Level: 9" or "somewhat hurt" rather than
"hitpoints: 445", Genesis has always maintained that global shouts or
chatlines destroy the feeling of immersion that Genesis strives to
uphold. In Genesis, if you hear a voice, it should either be from someone
in the room with you, or from some spell or artifact that allows magical
communication. This is the type of immersion we want to preserve and
foster. We bend this principle for the sake of helping true newbies
learn to play the game, but we do so as a necessary evil, and with a
great sense of care and responsibility for not letting it turn into
a chatline.

Lately, I've seen more and more examples of <ntell> use morphing into
the stuff you typically see on a global chat line. Casual conversations,
greeting friends, joking, teasing eachother, asking for help with quests
by non-newbies, coordinating teams, etc etc etc. Nononononononononono.
We have post offices for that sort of thing, and we're not going to let
the game go down the path of craptastic global shouts and chatlines!

So, to be very clear, if I see you doing this sort of thing I will warn
you. If I continue to see it, I will ban you from ntell. I'm a grumpy
old man on this issue, so don't test me!

Thanks,
G.

I personally am really glad to see this. I'll admit that last night I probably used it wrong and told someone where a room they were in was on an external map, but it was more to get the little twit to be quiet, because they can't seem to understand that people are being purposefully vague due to her misuse of the line.

I've taken my newbie pin off on several occasions recently due to the fact that I can't even hold an RP conversation for all the chatter that is coming across on it. It's gotten to be a little ridiculous.

On the other hand. We actually HAVE some real newbies now. some of them has never experienced a similar game before. And most are very used to being able to chat in games. So while I generally agree with Gorboth I think we need to be able to be a little understanding too. About where they come from before coming here. This is a game thats quite different from modern games in many ways. So yeah, I think you cant just go "Dont say a word unless its a question related to the game and you're below wanderer!!, and hush immediately. I doubt that has a very good effect on anything... ease them into understanding our ways is what I think!

But actually having some rules on the newbie pin helps alot. Because most newbies has no clue we have rules. Many old players who return dont know either. Now at least there is some info we can refer to instead of hushing people and feeling like the bad cop.

I'd also suggest raising the "newbie" limit, as been suggested many times before. Newbies tag along helpful experienced players and find themselves above wanderer very quickly, while they are still really newbies, and then become hushed for asking questions. I think we could up it to veteran or something... at least great adventurer...

As with most situations, common sense dictates policy enforcements more effectively than anything else. The rules are a guideline. I wouldn't ban someone just to satisfy the letter of the law. I will ban someone for ignoring the spirit of the law.

Personally -- I found behavior of certain people asking for help to be a bit obnoxious and have thus decided to no longer to carry a newbie help pin.
If something I wrote sounds confusing ... assume you misunderstood it.

I have broken my pin several times because of newbies that use the ntell as to chat.

Damn those newbies. coming here messing up our nice little game! :)

Guys and girls. Really! For ages we've been begging for new players, and now that they come they're not good enough?:)

Seriously, every truly new player will have a tough time adjusting to everything about Genesis. Its different to many "new" games in so many ways. Give people a break. Fine, newbie tell isnt for telling people that you just walked your dog and stuff. But thats how chat works in most games. So, c'mon. Ease them into figuring out we're different. I think we can accept a few mistakes on the ntell made BY newbies. Yes, we should obviously not _encourage_ casual chatting, but that is maybe something we have trouble with sometimes too, so...

Would you enjoy trying a new game and then reading on the public forum that people think you're doing it all wrong and that you're obnoxious? Really... come on. Be nice! Newbies have feelings too!

Oh, believe me, my biggest beef isn't with the Newbies. Sure I called the one a twit because they can't seem to read between the lines. However, my biggest pet peeve is often the people that send about 50 messages and have a conversation with the newbie. If you're interested in having a conversation, ask them to let you lead them about so that you can teach them a bit about the game. It's the veteran players that I shouldn't HAVE to tell how to use the ntell that are using it improperly that bother me the most.
