Code: Select all
Denizens of the Donut,
Please prepare yourselves for a pre-emptive Armageddon. In
roughly 24 hours, we will trigger one, to make some further
changes to the item-breaking system.
Some info about the change:
Players have always really hated it when a weapon or armour
unexpectedly breaks from prime condition. And, why wouldn't
they? It sucks! We are going to change that. Actually, we
are going to change that quite a bit. Now, weapons and
armours will not have a chance to break unless they have
degraded below "touched by battle" condition. This means
that prime and fine contition is absolutely safe for play.
Only when things look touched by battle will you want to
make a trip to your favorite smith to get some repairs done.
The reason we want to push an early Armageddon for this is
that the change to make all worn items susceptible to
breaking resulted in far more hardship than we had desired
or (honestly) anticipated. Therefore, we want to get a fix
in to address that as quickly as possible. Items like rings
and amulets can (and will) still break if you do not
repair them. But now they will not do so without ample
warning and a chance for you to apply repairs.
Another word, more generally, about our process with
changes recently:
We did not do a lot of advance warning about the changes to
item breaking, imbuement distribution, or stat-imbuements
prior to applying them to the game. Sometimes this will be
the way it goes. We're a volunteer workforce, and we do not
always have time to do testing, development, AND good
public relations. That is not a great excuse, but it is a
true one. I, for one, could have done a bit more to prepare
players for what was coming, and I apologize to those of you
who felt taken for granted or unconsidered in this process.
The game is for the players, and while we have the job of
trying to do what we can to make it the best possible game,
we also can work to try to help players prepare for and
understand any changes that we decide to enact.
So ... there you have it! Another change a-comin' but
this time with a *slight* bit of forwarning and some words
about the process.
In twenty four hours (approx 22:00 gametime tomorrow,
Thursday, Feb. 25) Armageddon will pay us a visit, and
issue in a new reality for armour and weapon condition
vs. breakage. Many thanks to Cotillion for making the
changes a reality.

Will the item limit on some things be tweaked to reflect this change? As least when some items broke they were recycled, giving others a chance to obtain them.

Excellent question. Let's see how that plays out and if tweaking is needed, it can be applied.

Mersereau: Are you referring to the old system of recycling weapons? When there was a fixed limit of certain items, and if you broke one you knew a new one was gonna spawn pretty soon? Perhaps you are not aware, but that system was changed some time ago. Unique items work differently now, and you can't really hog all copies on a certain item, and keep recycling them every armageddon like you could before.

The last change I knew about was a change to the way items spawned on NPCs so that they were spread out during an uptime, but limits still existed.

Got point. I do not think that is possible, but it's something that Cot or Mercade probably would know for sure. They're not awake though, perhaps they can have a look in the morning and see if something can be done to make EQ behave like it's close to Armageddon. (Which it is).

Right. Yes we changed it again after that, there was a change about a year ago that changed how unique items spawn. Here is Cotillion's common board post about it from Mars last year:

That's not really what I asked. Given there is still a limit on some items once all the copies are out no one has a chance to get one, and with items breaking less that chance is even lessened. 5 copies of an item is still 5 copies, they just last longer. Once those 5 copies are out, until one breaks there won't be a new one. This change again restricts the opportunity to acquire unique gear.
