New Global Magic System ...

Post by gorboth » 26 Mar 2018 22:22

Code: Select all

Denizens of the Donut,

Today our esteemed Archwizard Cotillion has made global the new system
of mana that has been field-tested by many magic guilds over the last
few years. Thus, all players, regardless of whether or not they are
in a magic guild, will experience the following (some new, some old)
realities:

   - The int stat determines the size of your mana pool, much the same
way that the con stat determines the size of your hitpoint pool.

   - Mana pools are much smaller than they used to be, meaning that
for the same int, you get a much smaller mana pool than you did
     before this change.

   - Mana regeneration speed has been roughly tripled, meaning your
smaller mana pool will regenerate much more quickly than before.

   - That mana regeration rate is determined by your wis stat, so that
with higher wis, you regain mana faster than with lower wis.

   - Other factors that will influence mana regeneration are spellcraft
skill and intoxication level. (we leave it to the players to
     experiment to determine best results.)

These changes will only be felt by players who have not been in magic
guilds that have been using the new system. The Morgul Mages and the
Academics were the first guilds to implement them, so any guilds which
got a recode after those are included in the list of guilds that will
not experience any change.

For everyone else - it is a new day! (at least, as soon as you do a
relog ...)

Many thanks to Cotillion for moving this now into the global system.
Thanks go to Petros and (to a lesser degree) Eowul for their work on
the original concept years ago.

G.

Hmmm..
What about forgotten guilds who hasnt recieved any love and got old code for spells? Has mana cost and other effects been considered when implementing this?

Hmm, much less mana pool, spell costs in old code guilds the same amout of mana as before = much less spells you can cast. So Valars, Minstrels and rangers have another "upgrade" of their "power" right ?

At least they (we! :) ) get the upgraded regen by now.

Thank you for implementing this! This is great for the Minstrels, who I've been thinking I never see aside from Grampal. The new mana system is far superior and more fun, having switched from the Minstrels to join a recoded guild. The only way to get mana back was to eat tons of herbs, but now they will become more useable, including their offensive Vibrato song, which I rarely used as it is inefficient compared to their heal. Mana regen is much better than mana pool. So I think this will be a big plus for the Rangers, who tended to have a problem maintaining mana despite munching on herbs as with the minstrels. With herbs, I think they will keep up healing much easier, but we will see! Since these guilds won't be recoded in the next year, I assume, I hope this will prove a welcome compromise to the Rangers for now.

Rangers kinda benefit from it, as for the rangercode, yes its sorely needed, they kinda need a wizard tho that wants to :o

Intresting.
I did not show up last month, so I haven't seen the new system.
Are you saying that Vibrato is more usable with less mana and a faster mana regeneration?
This sounds odd, but I will ofc test what you say.
Calling back when I have tested.

Ok. Went to Cadu for a test.

You attack the fierce jabberwock.

You expertly attempt Vibrato.

The fierce jabberwock jabs your body with his claws.
The fierce jabberwock just nicks your legs with his jaws.
The fierce jabberwock is forced to the ground by the power of the music.

The fierce jabberwock grazes your head with his jaws.
You lightly bruise the fierce jabberwock's body with your right fist.
north
You are now hunted by a fierce jabberwock.

After four Vibrato, my mana was all gone. Blue manabar was completely empty.
How much mana do I have?

You are far from improving to immortal intelligence.

After 8 minutes I had regained half my mana which is great.
But the Vibrato song seems to be as useless it used to be.
I never used it. I will never use it with this low damage and high manacost.

How much damage did I do?

>
south
A nice meadow.
There is one obvious exit: north.
A fierce jabberwock.
A fierce jabberwock is fighting you.
>
ha
You are physically somewhat hurt and mentally in a vegetable state.
The fierce jabberwock is somewhat hurt.

Does title in Minstrels affect the efficiency of the song?
No idea, but I do not think so.
My title is "Esteemed Minister of the Concords" which is rather high.

Minstrels aren't converted over to the new spell system at all. Looks like vibrato could potentially drain your entire mana pool in a casting ;).

Having said that, it won't be hard to convert them over... just need someone to spend the time to do it.

'Why not wait until all the guilds are converted over before introducing the system globally?' you may ask? Great question. The answer is making the new mana system global was a big, technical job. I've been asking for it to happen since SoHM opened and PoT got recoded... as the hack using shadows messed with the game client mana bars which I thought was a bad new player experience. I actually can't believe this finally got implemented, so some big kudos to Cotillion for making it happen!

It also puts the pressure on us to tidy up those laggard guilds on the old legacy system and other items that use it.
