Ideas for commands etc to help with a new character

Post by Tarax the Terrible » 11 Jun 2010 14:36

This applies to Newbies, or anyone creating a second.

Its great the character creation process is streamlined now.
Pick from menus etc. Nice work from Gorboth and team.

I always felt that skills is a really long winded typing intensive exercise.
The first time you probably pour over them all wondering what to do first, but when you are only going to AG levels they are all going to be maxed soon enough.

How about when you enter and ADV Guild and there is unlearned skills you get a message telling you that, instead of having to type learn.
Then the command learn all could be added to quickly learn all available skills.
Or the improve command would automatically learn a skill if you try to improve it.

typing
improve appraise enemy
opps
learn appraise enemy
improve appraise enemy 10
is a little long-winded?

Also as to what to improve next..
improve command changed to give a menu?
1) improve combat related skills
2) improve quest related skills
3) improve money-making skills
4) improve other skills
5) cancel

Menu changes according to what is still available..
Doesn't show skills that are maxed.

so for example
>improve
What would you like to improve?
1) improve combat related skills
2) improve quest related skills
3) improve money-making skills
4) improve other skills
5) list all skills and let me improve them manually (the old way)
6) *Cancel
> 1
Combat related skills:
1) Attacking
2) Defending
3) Improve recommended as much as possible
4) *Cancel
>3
What is your preferred weapon?
1) Unarmed - Useful in early stages when you don't have a weapon
2) Club
3) Axe
4) Polearm
5) Sword - Popular Choice
6) Daggers
7) Missile weapons - Not very popular
8) *Cancel

I have no problem with the current system. The only command I'd like to see added though, would be 'max', which would attempt to spend all the money you currently have on you to improve certain skill until you either run out of money or you maxed it.

example:

Code: Select all

> improve
Skill | Current Level | Maximum Level
----------------------------------------------------------
Sword | apprentice amateur | superior journeyman

> max sword
You improve your skill with sword and are now confident acolyte.
Something like that.

If this were to be worked on, I'd suggest just adding "train"
train : lists skills
train swim : learns or improves swim once
train swim 5 : five times
train swim max : maximum number of times

However, I suspect this would be a large effort with minimal benefits... there are lots of different adventurer's guilds to change and many guild trainers that would require tweaking... all to add mild convenience to a element of the game that is only used occasionally. Bigger fish to fry
