A Keeper Steps Down ...

Post by gorboth » 24 Jan 2020 23:09

Code: Select all

Esteemed Denizens of the Donut,

I took a hard look at my productivity lately, and it was just embarrassing.
I compared the five years at the start of my Admin career to the last five:

=========================================================================
2005 - 2010: Character creation revamped, Tutorial built,
Quest Orbs implemented, Mapping system created,
Sparkle redesigned, Wednesday Market quests built,
Mercenary Guild re-created, Imbuement system designed

  2015 - 2020: New Sparkle Pub created
=========================================================================

*laugh!!*

*sigh*

*scratch head*

No ... it is time to go back to 2007 and remember why I wanted to become
Keeper in the first place. At that time, Tintin and Mrpr - two of our
amazing founders, who stood on their incredible years of work that literally
created the game, and all the systems and design we use every day in the
development and gameplay of Genesis - were exactly where I am now. They
no longer had the time or energy for Genesis leadership, and were maintaining
their Keeper positions at the expense of progress. It is clear that I have
now fallen prey to this very same issue!

And so, it is time to look for new leadership. Fortunately, I have not
needed to look farther than the end of the hallway outside the Admin Lounge
where Cherek likes to hide behind the grandfather clock and make
Armageddon jump when he walks by (it never gets old ... to him.)

These types of shennanigans point to the fact that Cherek has all this
energy, enthusiasm, spirit, and zest for Genesis ready to roll, and, as
we have seen over the years, quite a lot of vision, leadership, creativity,
and community-building expertise as well! Cotillion, Arman, Mirandus and
I all feel that Cherek is the person we would like to see as a new Keeper.
Fortunately, Cherek agrees, and I can already see the (dangerous) gleam
in his eye as he edges toward my trusty Keeper Couch.

So, it is not without a fair measure of grief that I post this, my final
note as Keeper of Genesis. It is also not without an immense amount of
gratitude. Having the opportunity to work to build the Genesis I always
felt was possible has been, easily, the most fun I have ever had in my
life. Thank you for working with me over the years, and for your patience
with my many failed attempts at this or that. We've enjoyed a lot of
great successes together, fortunately, not least of which was the truly
this-cannot-be-happening event when we landed in the pages of PC Gamer
magazine (one of the great moments of my time on earth!) Genesis is very
strong, and we keep showing up to have fun together.

Oh, I do plan to keep showing up. In fact, I am going to go back to
being a wizard, and the only thing I'll have to think about when I log
in is my one project - completing the Cult of Chemosh Necromancer guild.
You will all die horribly when it opens - you're welcome.

And so ... I toss the keys to Cherek. We have a new Keeper for a new
decade, and I am so excited to see where he will take Genesis in the
2020s!

Warmly,
G.

Gorboth,

Thank you for all you have done in your role as Keeper! I look forward to seeing what lies in store under Cherek's watchful gave and from the Cult now that you'll have fewer distractions (from me and others) pulling you away.

Cherek! I have needed to poke my head in more often and checking in on what you are doing may be the impetus I needed!

Thanks Gorboth for all the development and innovation you have brought to Genesis. I would never have returned if I wasn't inspired by a number of your new creations!

Looking forward to working with Cherek and on his vision for Genesis moving forward!

On a more positive side... time for more pie now.

Thank you Gorboth for the years of hard work. Hope you can unwind a bit and get second wind while playing bongo-bones with DEATH.

I'm a bit late, but thank you Gorboth for steering the ship for so many years! Cherek has some big shoes to fill, however I'm sure he is up to the task.

Thanks so much, everyone! It has been a pleasure that I'll never forget. I agree that Cherek is up to the task. One does not simply *walk* into M ... er ... Keeper.
