Speed up Genesis

Post by Laurel » 08 Feb 2011 14:00

Idea:

speed up Genesis

How:

shorten the time of a "combat round"

Why:

in the old days Laurel used to run around with teams of friends - she was smaller, combat outcome was less steady (most times we won, sometimes we didn't - now I KNOW which foe I will win or not) BUT combat lasted way shorter
it was fun - it allowed to spend more time travelling, herbing, etc.
now Laurel is usually solo, can bring down the same enemies as before, but it takes ... gazylions of time :( it's BORING to watch my enemies being scratched/scraped to death

Why do not:

this could decrease the life-span of grind-areas mobs
this could increase the growth speed of grinders

Why do:

this would speed up Gen experience
this would allow to complete ANYTHING (get any gear, kill any monsters, etc.) in shorter login-times
this would bring Gen into a more updated gaming environment, where people (like me) like to login for shorter periods than a few years back (+12h Gen?!?! not anymore!)

More suggestion:

increase the combat-round duration for teams, while decreasing combat-round duration for solo-fighters ... balance would be crucial of course

I'm writing this, cause I am tired of the speed a legend char with good gear can achieve anything if it's not in 2 great combat guilds (i.e. DA+AA, AA+necros, etc.) ... I'm tired of it even before Laurel takes anything from racks ... also because I've experienced mercs/aa (Tive, you tit!) with decent gear outperforming Laurel (with superb gear) greatly

or just update-upgrade Rangers ...

Well... Hmmm.. no speed up here for me. Game moves fast enough. :)

but i see your points. But why not as you mention in the bottom with tiny red, Wait for the ranger update, if its on its way, just hang tough and wait.. Perhaps give them some more damage and make those insaine cheat skills go away.. I mean throwing sand is one thing, But then have the nerve to make you unwield.. Damned Shadow elfies !! Ehh rangers.. !! :D

But no i suggest wait it out, if its rumored to come it proberly will, or change guild? becoma a glad militia untill. they do quite well. Merc Militia, and align with rangers? Or Neidar Shield thingie.. or, or, or.. But I know you proberly want to be, and stay as a ranger, so wait for the update would proberly be the wise thing to do..
I’m not a complete idiot. Some pieces are missing.

Messing with combat round duration would really be hard to do (imagine changing every special accordingly, re-calculating the tax etc.).
The best ways to speed up combat would be:
1. Make regular hits do more damage (so it's not just special attacks that count).
2. Make armour not matter as much.

Either would be fine for some speed increase, both would be great for combat speed increase. No more "You scratch something" for sevaral minutes; BAM! BAM! the fight's over.

But it might get people dying in playerfights so I guess that idea would never pass...

I voted keep it as it is. I think its moves in a good speed, but from the true newbies I've spoken to they think its goes way too quick.

And its true newbies we need to live on, so if something it should be slowed down. But that would probably annoy us old ones too much so lets just keep it.

I think that all this is just another facet of people growing so big while everything in the game staying roughly the same. People are now soloing things that required teams to kill, hence the slowdown effect.

Might actually be extremely easy - just speed up the "heartbeat" of the game, and everything will move faster. The only coding needed, then, would be changing the calculation of player age (to not have that sped up as well) and specials coded in a weird way that doesn't use the game clock. A similar mud had a ring of speed that gave the wearer doubled heartbeats, and it worked perfectly (apart from being way overpowered, of course).
Adjusting damage and armour efficiency, though, I would assume to be a very delicate work, which would probably need a number of adjustments before everything was back in balance again.
As for PvP becoming more deadly, there is always the possibility of handling PvP damage differently (lower the damage) from PvM damage. This method has been used successfully on other muds where the game focus has been more towards PvP.

I have declined to vote on this, though, because I feel the implications are way beyond my grasp. And my rantings here might also be totally off. So, to not have to write a second note later, I'll apologize here for whatever might be wrong:

I apologize, Rhaegar. I admit I was wrong!

I couldn't fathom combat with Mergula going at warp-speed.

Though I am for far-less spamming combat rounds (Perhaps allow us to go one-past see fights off) and do (See no fights) so you don't even have to watch your combat.

Just gag it all Alexi :)
Although back in the day I enjoyed having not only 'see fights on' but also 'gag misses off'. Talk about spam :)

Edit: Before any conclusions are made. Let us see what actually happens during a combat round on genesis.
I have denoted where combat rounds start/finish (not terribly accurate but accurate enough).

Code: Select all

You are no longer hidden.
You attack the tall dark-skinned male human.
You begin preparations to use a special attack form.
You prepare to brawl the tall dark-skinned male human.
The tall dark-skinned male human barely scrapes your head with his ornate
gold scimitar.
You swing at the tall dark-skinned male human's left arm with your draconian
claymore, but he easily parries your attack.
>--------------------------------------------------------------------------<
You successfully kick a shower of sand into the eyes of the tall dark-skinned
male human. He looks blinded!
You feel calm again.
You scratch the tall dark-skinned male human's legs with your draconian
claymore.

You once again feel ready to try a brawl.

The tall dark-skinned male human rubs his eyes, and seems to have cleared
them of sand!

You execute Falling Of The Mountain at the tall dark-skinned male human!
The tall dark-skinned male human stares in stunned silence at the fatal wound
left by the flash of your blade.
As the tall dark-skinned male human hovers on the verge of death, you strike
forward with your draconian claymore. The tall dark-skinned male human's head
rolls backwards off his neck in response, which hits the ground a moment before
the rest of his body.
The tall dark-skinned male human died.
@ your bodycount has reached 9
You killed the tall dark-skinned male human.
Too slow? Too fast? Decide for yourself.
