Make it a pick and choose..
You can pick if you want say a cloak, sword, ring, helmet, greaves, body armour et cetra
The views posted by me on this forum is not the views of the character Amberlee in-game.
If you ask for my opinion here, you will get MY opinion, not that of my character.

I am against picking and choosing. I think it would be better if it were all a mystery.

OMG!!!!! BRING BACK THE FORMLESS METAL WEAPONS THAT WERE GIVEN AS REWARDS FOR WINNING THE TOURNAMENTS IN THE ARENA!!!!

But seriously those were awesome, and changed to whatever you had the greatest proficiency in. I know the wizard who coded them took the code with but shouldn't be that hard to replicate in some form.

Sorry guys, but I feel that a monetary reward will make this whole thing uninteresting for most people, and just introduce more money into a world where money is already pretty uninteresting after the initial period of maxing skills.
And if the cost for a ticket is neglible and you can only have one ticket per person, I would dutifully buy my ticket every week but not bother more about it since there's nothing more I can do to improve my chances.
It has potential, but you will need something more to make it into an interesting event.

Booger: Well an item is fine I guess. Or simply the option of taking money instead if you want? As suggested above. For most "small" people (like below veteran atleast) money is most likely more useful than a great item is.

But having to spend alone time looting to get money for the tickets doesnt make it interesting to me, especially since it excludes all the small ones from seriously being able to have a shot at it.

For me it does not have to be anything "more" than just a weekly draw. Just for fun. The winner will be happy, the losers wont lose neither time spent nor money. +1 in the population happiness balance.

But instead of having it cost alot of money which does nothing more than give rich people an edge, how about this:

Perhaps you could buy a ticket per day? That could encourage people to log in a little more, and head to Sparkle to get it. And who knows, they might meet someone there and stick around a little while. Would encourage logging in atleast, and as long as tickets are cheap it wont exclude anyone.

The interesting part would be to have a choice.. Item or money.

The money reward, should be all the money people have bought tickets for.

The item should be something cool that everyone can use. Which gives some kind of edge in fighting, since that is what its all about, generally.

So, you have received a mail that you won.
You go to the archives, like when you win any other event, and you get the choice on your screen:

1: Item
2: Money

You shouldn't see what kind of item, how much money or anything.
That would make it quite funny.
If a small person won, they would probably choose money, and if some big ones really dug in, it could be up to 1000 platinum you could win like that. Or even more. Who knows how much money people would drop in there to get the option to win some really cool item which stayed with them for nearly 14 days.

I think a lottery could be a nice feature, I think item/money choice would be a good one.

And the idea of being able to buy 1 ticket per day would be a good feature.
Perhaps calculate the ticket price on mortal level?

Wanderer pay 2 gold

Hero pay 2 platinum

Champion pay 5 platinum

Legend 20 platinum

Myth 100 platinum

Or if buying new ticket each day, have myths and legends have their ticket prices doubled for each ticket.

Chosing between money and item: Absolutely! Would make the reward interesting for everyone.

Chosing without knowing what item or how much money: Definitely! (and after chosing you will learn what the other choice would have given you, to give you a chance to whine in the forum :) )

Making the monetary reward the same as money spent on tickets: Probably wouldn't make a huge amount of money if people are limited to 1 (or X) tickets, and the cost is set low enough to give everyone the same chance. But still enough to be useful for people in need of money, and more realistic than handing out more money than people have put in. Though for this, it might be better to just add a gambling room: You can bet any amount of money, and have 1 chance in 50 of getting 45 times your money back.

+1 in population happiness: I see your point, but you might also get a -1 for everyone not winning, EVEN if the tickets are handed out for free.
Moreover, the overall +1 can easily be achieved by just adding a weekly event where everyone logged in at the time gets 50 pc (or a cool item, or a fantastic progress). Pointless, right? But if this lottery is turned into just a charity event where a random player gets a nice boost for free, I'd feel it's just as pointless, and even unjust since it boosts only one person, who just got lucky. Even if everyone has the same chance.

Imo, the game is easy enough as it is, so i will not support the lottery if it's turned into just a charity event, unless it at least gives the community/socializing part a huge boost. But I admit that if Genesis was given the difficulty level I'd want, everyone else would be scared away.

There is a difference between easy and easy. I too think Genesis is too easy, but at the same time too hard.

It is too heard to learn, but once you do, fairly easy to master. Once you get the hang of things its mostly about grinding your way to myth and doing simple chores or tasks to join the guilds you want. And thats that. Mastered. I would much rather see the game was easier to learn, but harder to master. Like most good games, be it computer games or board games.

I think it was more like that in the past, ironically enough, since so much has been done to make it easier. It was easier to get the hang of it before since most people who started playing did it in a RL community where others helped you learn. It was also harder to master, since it was more about mastering the politic, RP and PVP, than just simple grind. The "easy" grinding part was secondary.

Anyway, enough of the rant about that, that was off topic.

I believe the main cause for the lottery would be to have people log in at a certain date and time, and if we add "buy one ticket per day" it also encourages people logging in more often. Perhaps tickets can be sold each day at different times of the day. And you need to wait in line a little? That would have people gather up.

I see your point Booger. Its better to "win" something if you have done something for it, not just being given it for free. Thats true. I do not mind if there is some effort involved in gaining lottery tickets at all, but I think the effort should benefit people logging in, and/or people socializing more. Just buying more tickets will be a very lonely experience and benefit a for the most part rather lonely repetetive activity - looting things.

But in the end. A lottery has always excited people, and will always do. Gambling have almost always existed and today casinos and online gambling are thriving. Anything to do with luck where someone can gain "easy" money (or items here) will no doubt be popular. And things that people like and are popular is good I think. I do not say Genesis should turn into an online gambling game, just saying history show games of chance will draw a crowd! Be it a crowd of real people or a crowd of digital ones. Personally I always liked the old Athas tournaments, not mainly the fighting, but for the popular lottery of cool items.

And who said there can only be ONE winner? For the grand prize perhaps, but there can ba different prize structure in the lottery depending on how many bought tickets as well. There usually is in "real "lotteries.

Also, I would suggest that the prize is actually determined by the number of people who actually participate that week. I think the admin makes the incentives great enough, you might see an increase in activity on that particular day (much like the kiosk does on Wednesdays).
