Not to play the devils advocate just because, but I actually think the current who list benefits the game more than the old one.
It is not just for newbies that the game can feel empty - It is for anyone who doesn't have a very up-to-date Remember list, and for people who don't have many active friends playing.
Because there are limits to ones remember list, worse for some than others, you always have to juggle who to remember, and I have many times gone over my remember list and checked who hadn't logged in for years, and then deleted those from my Remember-list to make room for new names.
Now, the current who list have actually made it possible for me to see old players log in, that I once knew but didn't have in my remember anymore. That is very nice, and if the who list was anon again, several old players that knew each other could be logged in, without actually knowing it.
Also I don't play very actively, but when I log in and check my who list, it's full of Myths from enemy guilds. It is actually nice to see a list names of the other players out there, apart from the same 3-5 enemy names from my who list. That makes the game
seem more alive to me, even though I'm not a newbie. Well, maybe titans are considered newbies these days
I guess in general, I like the game being a lot more open in many aspects, than it was when I started out in the mid 90'ies. The who list being one of those.

I can see where your coming from, most of you old farts cant remember past a first meeting.
Would it not be a better option then to have the character choose whether he wants to have his name on the list or not? Can have it within the options to either show the new list with his name on it or go back to the old list with his name off any list but those who remember him.

IMo givs us the old one, newbies can just type nlist if they wish to know about people that are willing to help. The current one kinda makes it silly to have only names showing since everyone knows whos in what guild anyways today, better to make it so that ya dont kow at all whos online unless ya know them

The results seem very even so far.
I think the thing to do right now is keep it as it is, and reevaluate if the game should grow to a much more robust and stable population.

Give us the options to decide wether or not we want to be seen on the list for people you dont know then? Its way to easy to see a name and know where that person usually kill and just go there, it opens up for ganking. I'd not want to be seen by people other than those I've introed to, or just remove intro so everyone can see ya, might aswell

The change definitely ruined the anonymity of certain players such as Xar and Saya.
Getting Xar's introduction almost sparked a war between my guild and the Rangers at the time. And I remember many people not giving out intro's unless they were a trusted friend.
It also opens up the idea that Draugor said of ganking players due to following patterns. Before you didn't know if those people were on.
And it also made a MM spell and a SC spell rather useless.
I still maintain that it should only be available for people up to GA level. Of courses they could log in a smaller char and check who all is on, but it would keep anonymity among the higher level players.
I'd also like an archive who list. For people who have not been awake for 3-4 years that I don't want to "forget" in case they wake up or something. Also with certain players who have been deleted for whatever reason I don't want to take them out.

Personally, I don't have an strong opinion on this one way or the other...
[ Edit: I was wrong about the above. On further reflection, in so far as a Calian's power is directly tied to their current or potential teammates, with the current population this model of who gives out some powerful tactical data. That said, I am still more annoyed be the following... ]
Unless if this change is coupled with the f... fact that I seem to no longer be able to target the unmet by name. Perhaps some of my habits are relics of a different age, but I can not begin to describe, in less than profane, caustic and inappropriate terms my annoyance when I fail to hand something to a guildmate or whatever, without counting elves or something equally recockulous.
Just thinking about this has me all pissed now...

Easy my friend.
the forum can make you piss blood if you dont take it with a grain of salt or.. a ton.. trust me i know.
I think for the older ones, the who list would be best as it was in the past, to be able to play anonymous.. stuff like that. But its a great thing for new players, to see alot of names online, only encurrages to go play and meet some people.
so. I voted new, because currently the game needs players, not a better who list.. make it able to change name insteed, then you could be anonymous.. write a good farewell note to your guild mates, go change name, and race. get one free "death" with out the costs.. one new beginning.. that i would rather see..
but thats just me
