Makfly

The bugs I had on mind were in the first place those that innterupt gameplay/make it impossible to continue/force you to use an older save and avoid doing certain quests/entering an area etc.
For example the one I encountered a few days ago, also described here:
http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:No_One_ ... idhna_Mine

After completing the quest, though you have been cleared of all charges, there are still guards in shrine of talos, that act as if the whole quest would start again. They fell into a loop and decide to attack you, with more coming through the doors- getting the whole city hostile to you. Which forces you to never ever enter the shrine in the city, even though there is still a corpse of a guy- killed by guards, that might hold some valuable info/gold. And that's just example of one of many glitches.

Take a peek at skyrim wiki and browse through the list of major bugs. There are mostly of the kind descripted above.
This section is for bugs which can break main quest progression or cause large disruptions to gameplay AND have no known fix.
http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Bugs ... m%29#Major

Just how many of them! And these are only the most serious. I haven't seen a game that buggy for a time now.

Yeah I havent seen any bugs other then the occasional glitch with unlocking the end doors that contain dragonstones. But then I just cheat and use the console for those. Mods are actually quite easy to install most of the time someone comes out with an auto install program where you just download to a folder and the program picks it up then installs it without you even having to browse folders and extract.

And Ive found some pretty amazing mods that focus more on a new story line giving me over 100 hours of new gameplay. Believe the old morrowind even had a Star Wars one they came out with that was pretty damn cool. It was an entire new game with over 150 hours of gameplay.

My favorite was for Oblivion where they completely redid the Dark Brotherhood where instead of telling you how to gain the extra goodies they just gave you your mark then based on how well you thought up an assassination plot was how you were awarded. There were some rather cool ways to kill things then the old sneak and slash or following a simple path and clicking a button.

And dont forget the more Enemy Npc mods, level/scaling mods so you can reach level 100 without feeling like your invincible. Lots of extras, believe someone was even coming up with a multi player that ended up getting scrapped due to the programmers fighting with each other.

I haven't met a single bug.

And I enjoy the game immensely.

So in my eyes, it does exactly as it should.. entertains me.

Edit: 2 months later, I have moved on.
I played through most of the quests once, and tried starting again with another character.
But even though I made it completely different, it just wasn't fun.

Sure its okay once, but I had hoped there would be something more. Im not as entertained anymore as I was before.

Skyrim is Game of the Year as far as I'm concerned.

I've clocked around 200 hours in the game so far and only encountered a few CTD, but no gameplay bugs. As for the game being huge and nothing happening....

Take a walk around it, and you'll encounter numerous interesting/fun/exciting things that happen out of the blue. This game is seriously addictive.

I played it and enjoyed it for 80 hrs or so.. funny that is a fly's lifetime in terms of my gen careers, yet Gen can still keep me interested whereas I am getting a little tired of Skyrim.

I started out with Oblivion years back, and loved it.
My first char was sneaky archer and spend half the time running backwards trying not to get pummelled.
Found the arena and stayed there, as fighting was the main thing I enjoyed.
The archer sucked in the arena.

So next char was a fighter and was a slow grinder. But better than the archer.

Then I red up on what I should be doing and created a mage, cheated by adding cash and created my own spells.
Found that I had unlocked the "I win" button and got a bit bored.

The assassins guild storyline however was really really great.

Went into Skyrim with all this experience under my belt and found the going to be pretty easy.
I'm lvl 50 now having done mage, fighter, thief and lastly assassins guild faction quests.
The fighters was great, theives was a slow start but nice end, mage was okay and assassins a bit disappointing compared to oblivion.

I was wary of any cheating or console buffs since this broke oblivion for me, but I did allow myself an a few extra azuras and black star after finishing the quest. Since with all those game I find dealing with equipment inventory the most tedious aspect.
Didn't want to worry about having to manage soul gems fastidiously.

Now my char has nice alteration, conjuration and restoration skills backed up with a lot of one-haned and dual wielding perks.
Extra one-handed damage gear.
Use a sword which chills/paralyzes + bound one which soul traps.
Have frost resistance gear, since that is the only thing stopping me close to melee.
Wearing light armours and dual wielding I sprint in and dual combo anyone down rather fast.
Dragons I use a flame antronarch and some destruction spells till they can be bothered to land, then its chop chop time same as anyone else.
Most fun fight I had was blazing through a group of 8 mage necromancers in seconds with my blades.

Toughest was Moreki when it was still early on and I was relying solely on my Mage skills and didn't think about using Equilibrium to speed up mana regen.

So yeah its a good game was good entertainment for the money per hour.

So since everyone says its so great, and since reviewers thinks it fantastic. I actually bought the game. I dont buy games very often, and I rarely find many new games I try very fun. I often feel games are moving backwards. That story and gameplay was better in the old games, and everything is about fancy graphics and effects these days. But this was supposed to be good so... I gave it a shot.

My verdict?

This is it? This is the best game of the year? My first thought was that there cant be much competition if this is the best. Games really havent improved much at all since the first text-based games it seems. The opposite rather. Well except they have more polygons and more glow-effect on everything now. That doesnt make it funnier though.

So the world is huge. Thats not fun on its own. Its still the same old boring quests. Same old collection of dungeons. "Go find this thing, Ill tell you were it is, you just need to go get it". "You need to open a door, go find the key.". "Go kill the stuff in that dungeon and you'll get a reward". Yey... no need to think here. No need to ask around for clues or anything. Nothing to puzzle out. You'll even get a nice little marker on a map that tells you where the thing you need is.

Story and acting? Same old stuff. War this, war that, blabla. The people you meet are the usual cliché-types in fantasy games, and the acting isnt very good. The voice acting is nothing special at all, and the animation is very boring. Its not very gripping... If these characters were in a movie it would be a B-movie that would probably not even be released. It's a typical "game story" and "game actors". Its fine for a game, but compared to the great movies and books its really no idea to even compare. Its like when people here say "Oh the movie was good, for a swedish movie". Meaning the bar is much lower for swedish movies compared to "real" (hollywood) movies.

And the game aspect? Well, the world is big... it looks okay graphically. The fighting system is the usual. Click one button to hit, another to block. Its just the same system they had in the very first graphical games. Its not really challenging or fun. Same old. You can craft stuff, pick herbs etc... well... go around collecting stuff is nothing new. Is it fun? I dont know, in Genesis I would script it, I cant here... it bores me.:) I you die you just try again. Nothing lost. So there isnt any excitement or danger really.

I want to _feel_ something. I feel nothing. I dont care about my character, he/she is very anonymous. Lets compare the opening of this game with for instance and old game like Monkey Island. Monkey Island starts with a funny looking guy walks in and says "Hi, I am Guybrush Threepwood and I want to be a pirate". Within minutes we've heard a bunch of funny dialogue and we like the character we "are". Most importantly he _wants_ something. Skyrim? We are someone, who apparently is willing to die without even fighting to live. Our character says nothing, does nothing, just lays down on the chopping block to be executed. Thats the person we're gonna like? "We" dont even want to live...

But fine, Luke Skywalker is pretty boring too so we can live with a boring main character, if the other characters are likeable. Are they? Nope. I dont care about the characters I meet since they do such a poor acting job and dont get through to me.

In general I dont laugh, I dont feel sad, I am not scared or excited in any way, and I dont get the feeling of accomplishment that you get when you figure something out. Because there really isnt anything to figure out. Oh and it does have some annoying bugs.

It feels like the game is either made for very young kids, or they simply underestimate their audience.

I think Genesis beats Skyrim in most categories actually. Really.

Obviously I am "wrong" though. Since almost everyone loves it. Which means we will see more of this type of games. I suppose I just enjoy other types of games more. Or perhaps have too high expectations of games? But it does give me hope about Genesis. If I prefer it over WoW and Skyrim, I sure there a re a few hundred others in a world of 7 billion who does too.

But dont get me wrong. I think its an okay game. I'll probably play it some more when I dont have anything better to do. But if this is "fantastic" then I think the bar for games today is very low. I think this is an average game thats perfectly "fine". Nothing exceptional though.

@Cherek

You sound like you need hug. Do you?

Seriously though. After reading you rip through just about every aspect of the game, I'd expect your code in Genesis(I see you're a wizard) to be out of this world. Stunning features etc, and not just the generic crap that have been produced allto often.

Will we? See that from you, or do you settle for the generic solution yourself, when it comes to creating something in genesis?

Just wondering.

Avatar: I am not angry. It was my review of the game. As a player of it. I dont see why you want to compare that to anything I have made in Genesis as a non-professional game-content-maker.

Its like saying you cant write a bad review of Britney Spears latest album because you would not be able to do better music even though you play the guitar at home?

Or that I am not allowed to dislike the new Star Wars movie just because I could not make it better myself.

Not really fair?

But okay, I'll bite. You want to compare a project that costs millions of dollars, has tons of employees and artists and professionals working all day with their thing, to a hobby project game made by volunteers who for the most part work with totally different things... it really should not be comparable but I actually think it is.

I didnt make much content in Genesis, but the one quest I made I think surpasses many of the ones in Skyrim in terms of story and challenge, without being overly hard. I can think of a whole bunch of quests in Genesis that I found far better, entertaining, and exciting then those I have seen in Skyrim so far. For instance the Torque and Labal quests made me feel much more involved and feel more for the NPCs involved, I actually cared and wanted to know what happened in those stories and many others. Skyrim doesnt make me care in the same way.

Sure Genesis is "generic" and "cliché" in many ways too but Genesis is actually an multiplayer game where that is the main concept. Interaction with others. Skyrim is purely PVE and story, so since thats the main thing I expected more of it. And I understand if a volunteer wizard who doesnt work with professional game design doesnt always create the most stunning and fantastic content. I however do expect those who work on "one of the best games this year" to create stunning and fantastic content. Dont you?

Especially considering the reviews and all that.

For me I think its that text is better than graphics in some ways. Give me a well written description and dialogue and I can see how a persons looks and act. If you give me animated characters without life and a poor dialogue spoken without feeling I dont buy what they are trying to say either.

And again. I think Skyrim is fine. Even though it sounds like I hate it. :) I just expected more. Ill probably play some tonight. But fantastic and amazing. No. Far from. Imho.

You just sounded overly bitter in your review, but I can respect your reasoning.

I just couldn't resist :)

Avatar: Thats okay. I get carried away sometimes. :) And its always so much easier to complain on what someone else did than do it yourself. But thats our right as players, watchers and readers. :)

I still feel an urge to play it though so it cant be all bad. But just like Targun said it feels like it could have been so much more since they have the tools for a great game, but kind of misses the target, imho.
