It's actually real? Hmm. I am sure there is some trick to it that isn't seen in the final shot. Not even Jean-Claude is that badass... is he?

By all accounts, it is real. They engineered a wire of some kind that would prevent him from falling to his death in the case that he slipped off, is what I've read.

Almost perfectly. Clearly, he hasn't watched it as many times as I have. He was supposed to look up earlier and gaze like a total badass into the camera with a face that says, "Bow down before me, for I am about to part the sea with my legs."
