I agree that it is a valid way to play. But does this way of playing (collecting / recycling gear) have to be in direct contention with another enjoyed way to play (i.e. maybe not having the best of EVERY items, but maybe a darn good couple of items)? That's where the gear limit affects the game negatively, in my opinion - one type of player's enjoyed play style is able to render ineffective another play style, to some degree. Especially when it comes to things like the quickwood hoopak, for example, which is about the only decently effective weapon for SS kenders (I'm sure there are other good examples, this is just an easy to think of one that I mentioned above.) Even if it were set up in some obscure way where what is a normal 20% drop rate limit 5 item drops to a 5% drop rate after 5 are in the realms - all players would have a chance - even a tiny chance - at good gear when they went looking for it.

I'm not saying people shouldn't be able to collect gear and recycle it and enjoy that playstyle. I just think others should be able to have a small chance (even if it is quite small) at getting those good items as well.

Quite true. though, if I decide I want to play, I want to play, so empty and underpopulated racks won't deter me. I may have to adjust my expectations about what I will be doing. I can't imagine logging in and seeing lame racks and saying 'screw it', though I can imagine maybe some would.
As a serial gear collector, I admit every great once in a while it can be enjoyable to see what you can do starting out with empty hands. I've got a pretty good idea where I can get average items rather easily, and improving your gear as you move along can be fun.

As a regular task though, it becomes quite the demoralizing situation, especially if you can't find anything as a significant upgrade.
