I'd vote 75% of Gen ... vast areas in Calia, Terel, Kabal or even Krynn or ME that are hardly ever visited by anyone
not as dead as Khalakhor, but still ... if there's nothing worth visiting, noone will go there - even ogres

Meaningfull gamecontent will always beat eyecandy. If there nothing to gain or do in a place or area, it gets old and unused almost instantly regardless of theme.

Ofcourse, a good theme wrapped around something functional and usable I will say is one way to do it.

Yeah...
It is nice to read description of waterfall or view from mountain (even the most outstanding one) but it won't bring You to do it over and over.

Cadu sells Cadu Beer and Ahlgrens Stagecoaches. It also has a brothel, a casino and an orc children kindergarten. Not to forget classics like 'spit on grub', George the life guard and the most mind-boggling quest in the game.

Which domain can beat that?

All of those areas listed have aspects to them that can enrich an RP session for any player by the ton. My most fondest memories of this game are in two of those areas listed that I know no one visits because very few take the time to see what exactly is around them.

I would go as far as saying 75% of the listed domains in those areas that you view as pointless actually have some very fun secrets and locations to them. And now it becomes a matter of what is important to whom. If your interested in grinding grounds then of course most of the game you would view as pointless, however from my perspective that remaining 25% is rather dull and bland. You attack the same things the same way, they die the same way and you obtain the same things, the outcome is and always will be the same. No one talks about or remembers the time they were in a group slaying a qualinesti elf for the 1 billionth time.

They do however remember that first time someone took them to Icewall with a group of friends and began a snowball war, sitting around a rangers campfire doing nothing but telling jokes and roasting a few wildlife creatures, sitting at the local pub or casino wasting the day away or visiting old ruins that were once filled with life and the stories from better days.

Anyone who has taken the time to stop and explore their surroundings would highly disagree with such a statement.

Allmost noone will go there for those purposes alone. Does it justify to code a domain for those very few? Besides, you have the option to add features that makes everyone go there with a few easy adjustments like, add a npc with a usefull trinket, add a puzzle that do the same thing etc, and voila, your dead domain breathes again. A breathing domain increases the chance for such things you mentioned aswell.

Carrot on a stick equals win.

Azarias... as someone who has enjoyed things such as you mention its not enough to draw people to an area.

Khalakhor has a useful herb and one semi-useful item and that is it. I like making candles but its a bit of a pain to go there as there is nothing else to get.

Take the domain Avenir. It has those things that make exploring unique and fun, and many things other to do than grinding. An entire area devoted to beauty (that is pretty highly visited.)

That's an example of a domain done right and with all areas that people are interested in.

Khalakhor just doesn't fit that bill. On the flip side of this argument people are having for useless domains. I've found Faerun the same way. No quests worth anything, no content. Copy and paste code from other NPC's throughout the realm. I don't even like going their to grind though I understand its quite popular, but that plus an item or two is all that is worth it.
