Seing how its become a trend of late to post new logs
in these forums in attempt to influence the game, I thought
I would bring the topic up.

It seems some people are trying to fight their battles in
these forums, by posting logs and rumours of what other people
do in game. I was under the impression that to post a log that is
"new" one needed the approval of all the people seen in the log,
was this just a policy of a former administration or is this still valid?

Cause it seems to me if people are allowed to post logs on these forums
that effect me in game, then I think I should be allowed to retaliate
towards these people who spread these logs and lies about me on the official
forum.


There's a diffrence between postings logs that are old and does not effect
the game at all and posting logs trying to slander other people/get people in
trouble with other factions of the game.

Its like me posting a log of a calian running around with a Flaming black
broadsword hoping that it will lead to MM's going after this said player.
I for one think that recent logs should not be allowed to be posted on forums
cause they do more harm than good.


Or are we going to open it all up, cause in that case I have plenty of logs
showing up very detailed how the spellcasting guilds in the game work and
whats required to avoid their damage/casting.


What I am trying to say here is, what kind of forum do we want, do we want a
forum thats officially linked to the game that works as a propaganda forum
for a handful of people to try to destroy other people's gaming?
Cause thats what we're seing a trend of here, people who are not able to deal
with things in game take it to the forums in attempts to sway the public to
agree in their case hoping that it will lead to nerfs/in game retaliations.


Would appreciate it if the Admin could clear things up a bit, cause I am sure
there are other people out there who'se a bit confused on whats allowed and
whats not. I think we need a firm set of rules of whats allowed to be posted
on the official forum and whats not, cause right now there seems to be no
rules and you can post whatever you like no matter how it effects people/guilds
in game.

Personally, I hate logs. I hate them on the forum (for many of the reasons you mention, it publicizes much of which others might want to retain some sense of mystery about), and I hate them in-game, where I think it ruins RP. Part of the run of RP is heresy, trying to relate an account of what happened to you from memory, and letting others try to determine what happened. "Do you remember a description of the attacker exactly? Maybe we can figure out who it was!" Etc.

I always figured I was largely alone in this feeling. Whenever I'm asked for a "log" in game, Fourtcoer always states that he does not find it practical to hire a personal transcriptionist to follow him into every battle. (Sorry Earth!)

I agree a bit with freya here i think.
Recent logs should be avoided if they are too "revealing"


HOWEVER.
The forum and posting certain logs CAN be a good way to raise some questions too.
Like Laurels most recent log posted.

I was under the impression that logs were allowed as long as, what is shown there, is publicly available, and that it didn't contain spell casting. That is, logs between warriors were always allowed (for example, a battle between a neidar and a BDA, or a knight and an ogre).

I would like to point out that carrying effects from the forum (or any OOC/RL discussion) to the game is low. I have reported vampires to the mages whenever I saw them with the FBB, just like they reported people entering Minas Morgul during the scavenge event. However, I haven't reported calians when I saw them, just like they didn't report their own members when using it. Everyone has his own interests, and all is done within game, which is where everything should stay. It all depends on whether we classify the forum as a "board" inside the game, or as a "pub" where we meet, drink and talk.

Personally, I love logs, new and old ones, and I think they help show others what can be done within the game. However, my opinion clashes with everyone's else, so I will stay away from this discussion.

I love logs too.
But think I will wait longer before sharing any here in the future.
Till the dust has settled at least.

Maybe we should send the logs to a wizard instead, so that he can edit and post it whenever he thinks it is ready. Even when I object edited logs (I like the "chaotic" element in real logs), if it will help stop the complaining.

I appreciate Freya kicking off this discussion because I think it's a good and lively one to have. The way that I approach logs is that the purpose of them is to help others relive an experience that you had, so that people can enjoy it. It's like story telling. As long as that is the purpose of the logs, then that is not only allowable, but also encouraged.

However, logs also have the ability to reveal things about people that they may not want others to know. It's really in the interest of person posting to log to be careful about what they post. If you feel that what you post may hurt someone or reveal something that they don't want others to know, then some editing to remove information would be wise.

Policing logs is the last thing that we want to do, as the Admin. Rules are in general worse because people will use rules as the border of what's "allowed" and push the limits. Instead, use your best judgment, and if someone complains to you about something, take some time to address those concerns. Put yourself in the other person's shoes. If you wouldn't like someone to do it to you, then you probably shouldn't do it to them (golden rule, anyone?) It's a game, after all, and a big part of our shared experiences. Let's try and make sure everyone is having fun.

Let's say I am evil and logged how a Knight knocks out Calof for his gear or a Ranger drop-brawls Tom Bombadil - I have the following choices:

1. send it to the Knight/Ranger guild-leaders ... that wouldn't spread ANY havoc, would it? they'd just deal (or not) with it and NOT make it public

2. post it in Sparkle (and some other boards, just to make sure) with names (if I don't have the said Knight/Ranger remembered) and explanations what s/he abused and how

3. post it in here - in a somewhat "cut" version

What would you choose? How about a combination of the above? Cause if I was in such a situation with an evil character I'd post it in Sparkle for sure

Laurel, there's a difference between posting the log of someone abusing the system and the log of how people like to fight, what equipment they're using, their full descriptions etc.
In my opinion, when you're going to post a log that might reveal some things about others, you should first contact all parties involved and ask if it's ok with them. Simple as that.
