Re: Gear inflation?
As an experiment, today I retooled the difficulty level of the Red Dragon of Terel. Go after her if you like and report back here as to what you think of the change. I can revert back if it is no good.

Re: Gear inflation?
If the goal of the retooling was to make the Red Dragon more difficult, I would say you have definitely achieved this. I took a stroll by and had to stroll back out very quickly.gorboth wrote:As an experiment, today I retooled the difficulty level of the Red Dragon of Terel. Re: Gear inflation?
The solution isnt to necessarily make the NPC do more damage though.
It could be increasing HP drastically, give him more damage resistance, give them different "phases"
And things like that
Simply increasing damage dealt drastically is a really BAD thing, ESPECIALLY on that dragon cause
#1- It damages entire team
#2- There are very few ways to effectively prevent it,
#3- The loot obtainable is very limited and is completely not worth it for 90% of genesis.

See? Someone that understands it Increasing the stats is the simplest way, and... I and on the dragons I think thats a good thing, I kick ALOT of dragons asses in physicals (I am currently not allowed to attack and kill them tho). And that just aint right
Dragons are mythical badass creatures Not something you just stroll in, kick theire heads of and laugh as you leave -.- Thats just... wrong. However! For the red dragon as an example, just getting his teeth is silly, give him some decent loot, I am not talking ANOTHER uber item, perhaps... 4 decent items?
Those are the sort of changes I'd love to see, even the big bad morgul mages should need to employ a tank for this, USE YOUR GODDAMN SHIELDS, and if you dont have any more shields... try to be pleasant enough to get some more shields. The same goes for all guilds, dragons should be unsoloable, no matter who you are. And if you try to bounce them... make the possition themselves in front of the cave and block after like... 5-6 bounces.
And as I said, the size of the dragons can vary depending on the biggest person in the room or the team, room is probably preferable since people would prolly try to cheat kill them by having a smaller player attack first to drag the size down and then have an ubermyth 2 shot it. But most crucial... make them have loot that actually makes it worth it Perhaps make it simple and move some of the more uber items into dragon caves, to few dragons have the best shit in the realm, wich imo they should.

here we are or rather were discussing gear inflation and now suddenly we're talking about UPDRADING loot from NPCs? What???? I give up
Give everyone everything they want and let them keep it. Why should it matter?

My list is meant to suggest how to make NPCs challenge on par with the reward they give. If people have a harder time getting the uber gear we battle inflation since Heroes dont run around getting the most mega uber shit in the game with ease. I love the suggestion that makes the NPCs go nuts if they have the uber gear, awsome suggestion. Not EVERYONE should be able to kill ALL NPCs inte the game, hell if people ran around soloing the Balrog I'd prolly cry -.- And small people nuking NPCs that have the best weapons in the game (Runie, Broadsword etc) is silly tbh.
Re: Gear inflation?
I sort of agree and disagree.
Special dragons should be un-soloable.
Like Emerald, Onyx and that blue dragon outside Kalaman
The oversized newts in Icewall should only be an annoyance though.

I agree on the white dragons, they where the smallest and weakest of the dragons anyway.
But the ones that we have other than those... give them something good and make them something to fear, and do NOT forget about deepie, I feel for the poor bastard :/
Re: Gear inflation?
So who has tried the Red Dragon? I made her both tougher and more deadly. You are suggesting more deadly is not a good idea? This suggests to me that you think dragons should not be more dangerous, just take a longer time to kill? Or perhaps if they take a longer time to kill, they are already more dangerous because they can outlast you? It would help if people could give the red a try and give feedback. I have only gotten this from one player so far.

p.s. I definitely am *not* a specialist with combat and npcs. So don't expect me to "get it" ... you'll need to test and report and explain. That's how I get things.

Tougher and more deadly, give attacking a dragon a certain element of risk. I have never ever read about someone in the novels going into dragon caves solo and standing toe to toe with dragons, atleast not the dragonlance ones.
I would love to try the red but I am not allowed to attack dragons sadly otherwise I would have tried it for you.
