Hello all,
A big part of what I'd like to keep strong is communication and regular
updates as we move through our months of preparation for the 25th Anniversary
of Genesis. At the end of each month, I'd like to take a look at what the
goals for that month have included, how far along they are, and which if
any have been accomplished.
So, since we are now at the end of February, lets look at what the goals
were for this month, and then see how we are doing:
February--2013-----------------------------------------------------------
- Organization, planning, coordination, commitment established
- Work Goal: Finish magic occ guild recodes by end of May 2013.
- Work Goal: New robust version of client ready by end of December 2013.
As we can see, the goals for February were more about setup and prepping
for the year ahead than about getting things finished. Even so, quite a lot
has taken place since we first set the vision in place three weeks ago.
In February:
Setup for the Anniversary:
- The vision for the Anniversary was outlined.
- The goals for that vision were set, and a timeline created.
- A team of wizards was established to tackle the guild recodes.
Efforts geared at modernization for the sake of improved work capabilities:
- An external site was created (Asana) to organize project assignments
- Genesis given ability to export bugreports, etc, to Asana for
improved tracking, monitoring, and response.
- Wizard mailboxes and mail archives fitted for export to external
applications for better management.
Groundwork laid for development of new official client:
- GMCP (Generic Mud Communication Protocol) integrated into both the
Gamedriver and Mudlib, and the beginnings of a comprehensive
transfer of desired information to listening clients established.
- Development of preliminary GMCP in a new official client shown to
be successful, including things such as health and mana graphical
readouts that change in real-time as levels shift (simple early
proof of many things that will become possible.)
- Code created which allows Genesis to recognize which client is being
used by a given player.
Progress on initial guild recode work goals:
- Morgul Mage guild has moved into alpha testing of new spells.
- PoT guild recode information and organization nearly complete and
ready for code to commence.
- Elemental Worshippers spells complete, and awaiting final
cosmetic polish to move to alpha testing in the next week or so.
All of the above is progress that has been accomplished in February. I
will offer my own testimony that I have not seen the wizard world this
alive in many years, and it is a wonderful thing to behold!
I would like, also, to present a list of the wizards who have agreed
to take on guild coding responsibilities. This list shows who they are,
which guilds they are going to tackle, and initial thoughts on the order
in which they will proceed. This list is subject to change as more
coders become available or other factors present themselves, but for
now, this is what we are going with:
Eowul (Liege of Middle Earth)
1. Mages of Morgul-----------------------goal: end of May of 2013
2. Rangers-------------------------------goal: end of Dec of 2013
3. Heralds-------------------------------goal: end of Dec of 2013

2. Minstrels-----------------------------goal: end of Aug of 2013
3. Necromancers--------------------------goal: end of Aug of 2013
4. Elementalists (ScoP replacement)------goal: end of Dec of 2013
Navarre (Liege of Krynn and Ansalon)

2. Kender (Secret Society)---------------goal: end of Dec of 2013
3. Thieves-------------------------------goal: end of Dec of 2013
Zhar (assisting in Krynn and supervised by Navarre)
1. Archers (lay)-------------------------goal: end of Dec of 2013
2. Archers (occ)-------------------------goal: end of Dec of 2013
Gorboth: (The Fool on the Hill)
1. Union of Shadow-----------------------goal: end of Dec of 2013
2. Dragon Order (Monks)------------------goal: end of Dec of 2013
I encourage people to check out the Official Forum, where lots of
discussion on these matters tends to take place. It is also where a lot
of good answers come from we wizards who chime in on various threads
where it seems a good chance to speak to particular questions or issues
that are brought up.
All in all, I am thrilled with the progress in February. If we can
maintain it through March, we will be well on our way to completion of
our end of May goals.
On we go!
G.
