Leonard "Mr. Spock" Nimoy is dead, 83 years old, February 27th, 2015.

Rest in Peace, Mr. Spock, and the rest of us will try to live up to your credo: Live Long and Prosper. You sure did!

He has actually been taken back to Vulcan but didn't want to break the federation laws anymore than he already has. Thus he need a good cover story to fool us primitive pre first contact earthlings.
