Changes to ogre weapons

Hi all,

An issue that has been progressively growing in the realms is the
pervasive increase in non-ogre use of ogre weapons, in particular
the 'sledgehammer of the colossus'.

These weapons are a heavily taxed feature of the ogre Army of
Darkness guild, and the intent wasn't for the guild to be used
as a weapon merchant for other guilds.

So, as of 1 September changes will be implemented so that non-ogres
will not get the full benefit of ogre weapons when wielded.

For those who have invested in imbuing such weapons, this will
give you fair time to maximise the benefit of the weapon before
the change is implemented.

Regards,
Arman Kharas, Arch of Balance.

A good change.
A necessary change even.
But is it good to remove this option without a replacement or atleast having a replacement in the works?
The issue with the sledgehammer was the availability.
Maybe make a two handed hammer that is more rare as compensation?

Who needs to be compensated?
It's not like anyone else was promised this.
Just like with the permasave items. You had your fun, now its over.

If I understand correctly, the said weapon was imbalanced in the hands of non-Ogres. So, why would we think of replacing that imbalance with another? I don't get it.

The biggest issue in my understanding was that there were non-ogres benefitting from the sledgehammer without paying the heavy tax. I'm not sure if it was an issue of imbalance in the hands of non-ogres.

I'm not an ogre.
I never used the sledgehammer.
I want to be compensated. :)

PS I love the song by Peter Gabriel.

Have the users and the sellers of the sledgehammer been given their first(?) warning for exploiting a bug or do we nicely assume they had NO IDEA and just happened to be using it consistently despite it being quite an odd choice?

Though none approach the power of the sledgehammer, I can think of a few interesting two-handed clubs that were introduced to Krynn over the past few years. I never see players using them, though -- maybe now they'll finally get some use. (Arman's ulterior motive?? :p)

There seem to be some sort of misconception among many players that benefitting from a bug is somehow a punishable "crime" in Genesis. Please read the section about exploits in <help rules>.

Code: Select all

Exploits:

Should players discover a flaw in game design that can be exploited to their
benefit, they are encouraged to report the bug to an administrator using the
"bug" command. The administration reserves the right to reverse any
advantages players may have gained via game exploits.
Under our current rules players are encouraged to report bugs, and we may also reverse benefits gained through bugs, but we don't tend to punish players further. One can argue we should change those rules, but these are the rules we've had for many years, perhaps decades, so I am not really sure where this rumour originated, and why so many players expect punishments as soon as they hear about someone benefitting from a bug?

That said, this rule does not apply in this case anyway. That the ogre sledgehammers could be used by other players was definitely not a bug, so any non-ogres using it have not been exploiting any bugs. Just because something was used in a way that the creator originally did not envision does not mean it's a bug, it's just something that tend to happen now and then. Dedicated players almost always find some ways to use things in a way the developers hadn't envisioned - in all games.
