I've never run up against the limit, but I want to point out that <nick> is useful for all kinds of stuff, not just shortening character names. I don't see the harm in upping the limit a bit.

Eyrinphists, Scinternace. Joscelinda, Hildigunnr: In a proper client you type "Ey+tab", "Sci+tab", "jos+tab", "hil+tab" and the client autocompletes it for you.
Now imagine writing "deproelius" from memory back in the day autocomplete wasn't available.

Just adding my vote for a higher <nick> limit. I use all the spots now available and would use more. I have only once used a <nick> spot for a player name. More <nick>s! More, I say!
