I wonder how this works with guild boards. Can you leave a guild and still subscribe to the fact that there are news etc? Sounds weird.

I would assume that leaving a guild would also unsubscribe you from the board? I don't think the intention is that it should be possible to get notifications from guild boards if you are no longer a member of that guild. If that is actually possible, I suggest contacting Mercade and/or using the <bug> command.

It should be possible unless it was looked at specifically. It's just boards.
