Saving Racks A-Comin'

Post by gorboth » 20 Oct 2010 20:06

Genesissians,

They say that every stale donut still has a bit of tasty frosting that can
be licked off. Such, hopefully, will prove to be true with the recent
unexpected crash of the game. There was so much annoyance felt game-wide
that it caused the wizarding world to try to figure out what might be
done to make this sort of unforseen issue less of a disaster to the many
good folk who enjoy the realms on a regular basis.

A number of wizards have been looking at making a "saving rack" system
possible for quite some time. Following the crash, Petros did his usual
quick work and finalized a system that we will be implementing in guilds
throughout the game. This will take some time, and may involve the usual
"learning" moments.

So ... here is the schedule:

1. We will spend the remaining 10 days until our next Armageddon
updating the various racks in the guilds that we know about.

2. When Armageddon hits, the racks should actually make it
unnecessary for players to do their usual rack-saving blitz,
as it will all happen thanks to the new system.

3. Because we need to test the system a few times, we may run
much shorter uptimes of around 24 hours for 2 or 3 subsequent
Armageddon cycles. This will give us time to fully test the
system and see what needs to be done.

4. Once everything seems to be working, we will restore the
Armaggedon cycle to its much longer (current) uptime.

5. Hey, look everyone! We've got saving racks now! Hoooot!

This system will work regardless of whether or not it was an Armageddon
or an unforseen crash that caused the gizmo to restart. If all goes as
we hope, this last crash will be the last one that devastates the
drop rooms of the donut.

For this first upcoming Armageddon, I suggest that players do their normal
thing and personally save the most important items. However, it will
help us test the system if you do leave some things in the racks so
that we can make sure it all works. The racks themselves will save only
glowing items, of course - so a few of these will hopefully be left for
testing purposes.

Thanks for all your patience on this. I am thankful that we might have
a much better reality in place soon!

G.

Ok two things...

1) During the time of shorter armageddons, can you make it so that all items spawning on npc's save? Of course, after the item is recovered once through armageddon, it won't save anymore.

2) Hmm...on second thought, the other thing is guild related, so I'll post a note in game or send a letter about this.
