I reset the game continuously the few times I accidentally entered there. You reset it till you get a set of 3 piles or 5. 2 or 4 (respectively) of the piles must contain the same number of stones. Remove all stones from the pile containing a different number, and then follow exactly what the other player does.
Example:
Three piles of 9, 13, 13
Your move: Remove 9 stones from pile 1
Their move. Remove 11 stones from pile 2
FOLLOW EXACTLY for your move: Remove 11 stones from pile 3
Their move: Remove 1 stone from pile 2
Your move: Remove 1 stone from pile 3
The piles now look like thus: 0, 1, 1
Their move: Remove 1 stone from pile 3
Your move: Remove the last stone from pile 2 and win!

Yeah, I quit, I knew the room existed so I didn't take anything *terribly* important with me. Still obnoxious though, I wish there was some description in the room outside it like
"The room to the south gives you a feeling of hopelessness, you aren't sure if you want to find out why."

Well, feeling of hopelesness doesn't tell you much of what to expect either.
Perhaps just make it much more obvious when the dude is distracted and you have a chance to slip out.
It's probably not much of a comfort, but I know I had to quit out from that room too way back in the day, and it was no fun at all.

You can just leave? How the heck can you tell when he's distracted? Also, is it possible to just kill the dude?

You can't kill him that is the first thing I tried.
This was brought up before and I think someone posted an algorithm which meant the player who goes 1st always wins.
Funny room.
