Roleplay I

D&D is a roleplaying game. Is it a roleplaying game because you "play"
the "role" of a fighter? Or a mage? Or a thief? I would say no. It is
a roleplaying game, because you can play the role of a character and
through that roleplaying affect your world and the people, places, and
things in it. Are D&D Miniatures battles roleplaying? No, they are a
game that utilizes monsters and characters that are traditionally
roleplayed, but it is just a strategic simulation. Roleplaying a paladin
miniature to ask the evil priest to lay down his arms and cease this
senseless slaughter will accomplish nothing, and the simulation will
continue as if it never happened.

Is World of Warcraft a roleplaying game? To answer that we can ask the
same question we ask of D&D. Can you roleplay to affect your world and
the people, places, and things in it? No, you cannot. Is WoW fun? For
millions of people, yes. Is it well-balanced? By most measures, yes.
Can you play any type of character you want? Fighter, mage, assassin?
Yes, and there are no requirements to do so. You simply choose what you
want to be upon character creation. Is that more fun than the guild
system in Genesis? This question is subjective, but we'll get to that.

Is Genesis a roleplaying game? Yes. Why? Can you roleplay to affect
the world and the people, places, and things in it? How? Major factors
and effects are player controlled, permanent, and/or long-lasting the
most important of which are:

1) Players can kill players
This is true of WoW. How is this different on Genesis? It is
different, because death is a serious event causing lasting harm
to a player dying on Genesis. Why is this relevant? It is relevant,
because death and even the threat of death are ways to influence the
behavior of people in the world (the players).

2) Guilds and guild entry are player controlled
The ability for players to control who joins the guild encourages
applicants to roleplay. The ability of players to punish their guild
members and expel them encourages continued appropriate roleplay.
This system is another way to influence the behavior and events in
the world.

Is the Genesis system more fun than WoW? Is the WoW system superior to
the Genesis system? Can Genesis benefit from WoW style play? I say all
these questions have an underlying flaw. The things that have always set
Genesis apart have been based on the above two factors not how good the
game mechanics are. Shooting for WoW style game mechanics and balance
will not make the game better nor can it ever be achieved. Genesis cannot
compete with WoW in game mechanics (which all boil down to battle on WoW),
but it can offer one thing that WoW will never have: Roleplay. When
Genesis loses that, it will be dead for me.
