From what I knew, wizards were working on that kind of system.
In fact, the calians were updated that way: anyone can become
a follower without having a calian around. After the interview
the recruiter officer can turn you into an trainee, and then
into a full member.
I think the system could work if the only step where a player
is needed is to turn full member. In other words, anyone can
become a follower of a guild, and in two weeks time since
having joined, they are automatically turned into trainees and
given access to a "trainee" room within the guild. It would be
prioritizing "good faith": if a follower hasn't been expelled
in two weeks it is because the members themselves trust him
(even if it could have been because there were nobody active
inside). Certain guilds (especially fighter ones) could also
have an automatic promotion to full members, either by time or
by doing certain automatic tasks (like the Rangers' tasks).
But spellcasting guilds would prefer having control in who are
allowed and who aren't. I am not against it.
Even though they are a nuisanse, warring guilds require at
least a minimal introduction to new players. A neidar can be
attacked by Krynn natural enemies (priests, dragonarmies, even
templars), race enemies (ogres) and even others (like members
of Angmar that used to fight us). Add the eventual grudges (as
with the vampires) and you end up with a newbie being killed
by people he was not told to be careful about because nobody
took the time to explain him the guild situation.
However, I wouldn't object giving everyone the chance to join
any guild (however, in this case I would suggest letting guild
leaders build a ban list to prevent certain people to join
them.
